For our first individual two week project I decided I wanted to pursue something related to human trafficking. There was just one problem; human trafficking is such a broad topic. Having lived abroad for two years I have heard specific stories of how trafficking works in Cambodia, but I wanted to learn about the ins and outs of the system on a broader basis. Over the course of the past two weeks I have been contacting leaders and founders of organizations combatting human trafficking in a handful of areas around the world. I’ve learned about the ways individuals are recruited, and how often times victims are not physically, but psychologically bound. This week I also talked to a handful of students and found that when asked about where human trafficking occurs, nearly everyone thought it was only happening in third world countries.

Looking ahead I am excited about the potential to work with a local organization working to address trafficking here in Indianapolis. I am also exploring what it would look like to possibly travel outside the US to work with a human trafficking organization or non profit in some capacity.
