How auto filling saves time and lives
Auto filling is a service that has become an essential tool for the big web browsers. Auto filling “fills out forms automatically with saved info, like your addresses or payment details. When you enter info in a new form online” as Google describes. For many this saves time and important information, which makes filling out long forums much easier and less of a hassle.
About auto filling
Auto filling stems back to it’s origins of Autocomplete which stems back to 2004 with google introducing word prediction technology, where you would type a few letters or a word and a drop down bar of suggested searches would come up potentially saving the user time and not having to type out the full phrase. The suggested results were based off of the most popular searched phrases and the users most common searches.
Now with google chrome they have the autofill feature where in settings you can pre fill all of the following information
along with payment methods where credit card information can be stored and when inputed into a forum where instead of typing out the full credit card number users only have to type the 3 digit ccv number. This is another big time saver for users as credit cards consist of a long sequence of numbers that are hard to remember, and the auto filling only makes them remember the 3 digit ccv.
How this relates to this weeks reading?
In this week we talked about human factors in digital experience design where the chapter talks about various cognitive aspects that include
- reading, speaking and listening
- problem solving, planning, reasoning, and decision making
And after looking into how auto filing works and its benefits towards the user it specifically addresses attention, perception and memory.
When looking at how auto effects attention it allows the users to actually pay less attention which ultimately makes the process easier for the user. Instead of having to pay attention to every single box and making sure everything is filled out correctly you only have to pay attention to the first box and type a few letters.
The way I see auto filling relates to perception is the way we touch and interact with the keyboard and what we see on the screen. With auto filling it completely changes our perception on how we look at filling out forums, this is because our initial perception of a forum we have to fill out is thinking about typing out 20–30 words while white auto fill our perception changes to where we only have to type a few characters and then click the correct set of info which shortens the process by a great deal of time.
Auto filling effects memory by allowing users to keep their parts of their memory stored in the autofill system which makes it on easier on the users memory to look back to find the specific data that meets the criteria of a basic forum.
What we can learn from this?
As stated before the use of autofilling makes filling out forums for users much easier but it is also important to take into account the security of this information as it may be misused if in the wrong hands.
Do you use auto filling?
how much time would you say it affords you?
to you feel comfortable with google keeping that information stored?
