You Are Your Own Media Company
Now, more than ever before, you have the ability to be your own media company. Practically everyone around has a smart phone with the internet at their fingertips. Information is so easily accessible, that whatever you want to know or how to do, you can google or YouTube it.
Not to mention that on these phones we have something called social media that gives us access to billions of others to make connections with. We have everything we need to produce 4 ourselves and also get the word out on what we do. I will go into detail on why I believe today you are your own media company.
I understand the pros and cons of having a smart phone. To be completely transparent with you I believe, we have the ability to do what the smart phone does without the smart phone, but that’s another article. Let’s focus just on the pros.
I have an iPhone 7 and I know a lot of others have an android. Both work perfectly fine because they have great cameras. You can capture some great moments via photos and videos. If you are anything like me, you can edit all your content that you capture right on the phone and broadcast it to the world in real time via social media.
You don’t necessarily need a professional camera that can run you a couple hundred dollars or even thousands. I have done all my videos through my iPhone 7, and the quality to me is great. It gets the job done by allowing you to post to your preferred platform.
Which leads me to the next section.
Everyone is on social media. The attention is on these platforms. Facebook, twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn, etc. I’ve heard some say that these platforms are ABC, NBC, and Fox on the internet. Every platform has its specific use and different crowd. You have to understand how to use each platform and then you will be able to create your content.
Most importantly you have to take it serious. I hear a lot of people say “it’s just social media” and post any random thing. In my opinion social media is your media. It’s your news and you control it. We have allowed others to control our story for so long with something called his-story (history) and called my-story a mystery. It’s time we control our media by telling our story.
That’s the beauty about social media, when you tell your story you connect with others that share your story. You just have to be consistent and conscious of what you post. Your content slowly and organically builds your brand. This is how you distinguish yourself in 2017.
I’ve come to find out that to be your own media company, you have to create content. Not only create content, but do it consistently and on top of that it has to be good. Every business must create content, especially if they have an internet presence. Today you must have an internet presence, that is where the attention is.
I listen to the great marketer, Gary Vaynerchuk, speak about creating content and he said “to not look at it like you have to create, but document”. Just simply document what you do. People like to see the behind the scenes, especially if you have something to say.
Think about it, if you are reading this you more than likely have a business, thinking about starting one around your passion, or maybe you have a side hustle that you want to pursue full time. Whatever it is, if you are to document your experience through content creation, you will be able to produce 4 yourself on a great scale. Remember it takes time to provide value to the marketplace so show patience.
In closing, I hope after reading this article that you do whatever you want, just do it. You have everything you need within you and you have all the tools. Most resources are free and as stated earlier, we all have phones with the internet in our hands.
It all comes down to the execution. A lot of people know, but won’t do. So start documenting your story because you are your own media company.
