Amritsar is identified with the brilliance of the Golden Temple, this ornate Gurudwara rises over a huge pool of holy water in the heart of the spirited Punjabi city. Although the Sri Harminder Sahib is a mandatory visit during a luxurious North India Tour, it isn’t the only place worth visiting. Here is a list of some intriguing things to do in Amritsar from culture to cuisine.

# Attend The Palki Ceremony

The Palki ceremony is one of the top seven spiritual experiences in India, one that imparts a special atmosphere, and best watched at pre-dawn. The holy book of the Sikhs is carried in a golden palanquin from the Akal Takht to the chamber where it rests for the night at the main sanctum of the Golden Temple. This ceremony is accompanied by devotional songs. It is best to time your visit to include the Palki ceremony, which is an immersive local experience in Amritsar.

# Join The Langar For Lunch

Lunch is served at the Golden Temple which is a slow travel experience you shouldn’t miss while on an Indian holiday. An overall of 50,000 worshippers and pilgrims are served meals everyday, remember to offer your helping hand at the kitchen, by rolling some rotis, chop a few onions before you pick up a plate piled high for some delicious dhal and rice.

# Witness The Wagah Border Ceremony

Wagah is a village that is situated on the Radcliffe Line, equidistant from Amritsar and Lahore. With the onset of sunset, this border between India and Pakistan is closed for a ceremonial lowering of the flag, which is a daily ritual since 1959. It is a 45-minute procession that is accompanied by a stirring rehearsal of the National Anthem.

# Soak Up The Serenity At Jallianwala Bagh

This is the site of the 1919 Amritsar massacre when the British opened fire on a peaceful demonstration, the Jallianwala Bagh has a solemn and moving past. This place is immortalized with an eternal flame, with bullet holes in the walls; an agonising reminder. This walled garden is only a stone’s throw from the Golden Temple and is definitely a must-visit while in Amritsar. Take some time to soak up the tranquillity of the place by going around the garden lawns.

# Tuck Into Amritsari Fish

The city of Amritsar offers great culinary experiences too, and Amritsari fish is crowned to be on top of the list. These crispy nuggets deep-fried in gram flour batter and spiced with masala are delicious. The recommended local joint to try out these local delicacies is the famed Kulcha Land; be sure to try out the flat bread that goes perfectly well with the fish.
