Religious and Queer

Now since its Pride month and it becomes imperative for us to re-think on the beliefs and ideologies of people about homosexuality and about people who belong to the LGBTQ community. However, here today, we shall look into the religious aspect of the same and let’s understand how layers of struggle wrap around a person if they belong to a certain religious group/minority along with being homosexual.

Struggling to come to terms with the society after being gay as a child is unique to the experiences of those who grow up in religious families. If you happen to be born…

Na idhar ke, na udhar ke. The story of every third culture child.

For those of you who are drawing a blank, I’m talking about the NRI diaspora, the perpetually stereotyped with shady influential existences.

For those of us who flock to the Middle East only to return a few years later to pursue higher studies, the experience back home is hilariously awkward.

It turns out the internet has played quite the role in painting a very cruel image to the world which is fairly unfamiliar to those of us who have actually lived there.

Does everyone own an oil…

At the conclusion of a recent screening of the film “Ankhon Dekhi”, Rajat Kapoor met the intimate, chirpy, curious crowd of the houseful show for a Q&A session, beginning with a dig at the low numbers the film had received on its release by asking them- “Where were you guys when the film released”?

Well, some of them, as they also admitted with some pride, were among the few people that were in the audience on the weekend of its release in 2014. Some of them had maybe chosen to catch the show of Ragini MMS 2 which released the…

Not just the complete science freaks, but the entire human race seems pumped up about this huge scientific breakthrough. But do we really understand what a black hole is and why is it this fascinating? The popular image of Alaa Salah

The internet is flooded with the images of 22-year-old Sudanese student Alaa Salah, passionately making hundreds of protestors chant the songs of revolution in the streets of capital city Khartoum. Demanding President Omar al-Bashir to step down, thousands of citizens occupied the streets and protested actively to end the three-decade rule of economic blunder and violation of human rights.

The writer says: It resonated with me a lot considering I was raised in a similar sort of situation, having spent 16 years of my 19 years of existence in a place close to Dammam, that Ms. Rizvi mentioned, called Jubail. As such, a few months ago, I wrote on my experience and the resulting effect of it on a group of people called ECS and related it to a dish available there called the Shawarma.

Traveling through western India made me realize one thing for sure; people should actually travel before putting ‘wanderlust’ in their tinder bios.

When you have been telling people how much you love traveling, how soul soothing and exotic it is to travel since a long time, you cannot talk about the cousin’s wedding you have been to when you were a child before someone asks, “really? So how many places you been to?”

But something common for almost all of us is a flood of “Motivational Videos” forwarded by family elders who seem to swear by it. Who seem to nod and smile and hang on to every single word the speaker breathes out of his…

“Pakistan declared themselves as an Islamic country and India since was divided on the basis of religion should have also been declared as a Hindu country but it remained as a secular country.”

Despite all the uproar this recent statement in a verdict by Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen of the Meghalaya High Court, there is still a lot to be tackled and unpacked about this very common notion. Adding to the statement he further said,

“I make it clear that nobody should try to make India as another Islamic country, otherwise it will be doomsday for India and the world.”

On 28thDecember 2018, the Union Cabinet approved several changes to the POCSO Act (The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012) in order to safeguard children from increasing occurrences of sexual assault. Some of the key points introduced were stringent punishments like the death penalty in cases of aggravated assaults and making the provisions gender neutral. While the protection of young boys against sexual assault was long due, the announcement of the death penalty has earned mixed reactions.
