In this week’s studio, we designed mobile app interfaces which help citizens contribute to scientific research by collecting scientific data for scientists. I chose to create an app for fishers to gather data about fish populations and species at different places. First, the user can press “start” when he or she starts fishing. The app will automatically acquire the geolocation and allow the user add custom information for scientists. After the user presses “stop,” the app prompt the user to enter the species and number of fish he or she has caught. The user can navigate to review, modify and both his or her own data, and view the data collected by other users.
During designing, we found that motivating the user to continue participation is critical. However, I found this especially challenging because I tend to design this app through a scientist’s perspective rather than a user’s perspective. At last, I decided to share scientific research result with the users in a way which can benefit the users, to contribute to their motivation. The app collects information about fish, which helps scientists analysis fish populations and species. Then, the users, who are fishers, can choose their fishing sites according to these data to achieve higher efficiency.
I like this project because it helps me to think from different perspectives when doing the same thing. This can help me make my product accessible to more types of users. However, I believe that it would be better if we’re allowed to draw sketches on computers because it will be more good looking and more efficient. (Just to draw sketches, not those professional UX development tools.)
