FOSS4G @ Tanzania
Just wrapped up an eventful week at Dar es salaam, Tanzania attending the FOSS4G & HOT Summit 2018!
This has been my first at a FOSS4G event and it was amazing to see the great turnout (around 1K). It was indeed a tough task to choose from multiple tracks of presentations. I got to attend talks around academic research, big data, geo-data processing, imagery processing & humanitarian mapping efforts. I did learn a lot about tools & technologies in the respective space. Listing a few here for reference:
- geotiff.io
- Geotrellis, Geoserver, Geonode
- Data viz for Point Cloud: iTowns, Potree, CesiumJS
- AWS Athena for OpenStreetMap
- Elastic search for geo data
- osmesa -processing workflow for OpenStreetMap data
I’ll be doing my research on these tools one by one and keep sharing my learnings here in this space. Other than the talks there were also a couple of panels & discussions around diversity & inclusion in geospatial industry and the event in particular. It was sort of an eye-opener to hear different perspectives on the topic.
Overall it was quite a positive trip meeting enthusiastic people and moving around Dar es salaam to understand HOT’s work. Also this marks the end of my Outreachy program. Really glad that I got this opportunity and I hope more people get into the open source space & build great stuff with the community!
