Male Victims Being Prosecuted for Defending Themselves.

More than 700,000 men are victims to abuse by their partner a year. Two main reasons of why men don’t report their abuse is because either their partner makes a false accusation against them or a feeling of embarrassment having to go to the authorities. It hurts a man’s pride to go to authorities and being dismissed since its unlikely for males to be the victims in abuse. A question that comes to male victims is would it be right to arrest the male victims when police arrive on the scene? The males didn’t start the fighting, but when they try to defend themselves, women try to turn around towards the men being the abusers, not her; which then leads to the males being arrested.

A number of male victims who come forth for help has increased. Around 1,000 men per year come forward, after they have been falsely accused of abuse by their abusers. A man was falsely accused 3 times by his abusers and was arrested on the three separate occasions.

He said: “In the latest incident I made the initial complaint to police as my wife assaulted me. But when they arrived, they showed little concern and instead arrested me because my wife made a counter allegation.”

In the news we hear a lot about males being arrested due to “abusing” their wives. A woman, she was in prison for 3 years, bail set at $1 million, while going through trials. Allegedly her ex-boyfriend was abusive to her for years even while they weren’t together. One day he broke in and attacked her while her son was right next to her. She then left to escape him, by herself. She went into the car and he got into the vehicle and continued to strangle her, next thing was the crash and once officials arrived on seen, he was pinned against the front of the car against the garage wall. The woman claimed that it was either her life or his. She pleaded not guilty and after 3 years, the court’s verdict was not guilty.

People tell fibs all the time, especially when it comes to the law, even though when testifying we are under oath to tell the truth and only the truth. The woman that was no guilty for killing her abuser, in one version of her story, her abuser was in her vehicle continuing to strangle her; in another, she claims he was on the hood of the car and then there was the crash. It’s easier to believe women because they are seen as dainty little girls, while men are seen as warriors.

There have been cases were women call self defense when they accidentally kill their abusers. One women has seen abuse all her life and when it came down to her, she dealt with it because its what she learned from. When it comes to your life or your abusers, you’d want to protect your life, no matter the outcomes. However, murder is murder and everyone should do the time if they did the crime, there so be no one left off the hook no matter their gender.

Lady Kathryn Williams-Julien, the women who dealt with domestic abuse all her life, decided to to lobby for domestic violence victims, like herself, to no be convicted against crime to due with their abuse. Finally, in May, New York assembly passed the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, allowing courts to consider the domestic violence in the case, which would allow the victim to either opt for short sentences or to serve in a different program, i.e. probation.

In the end, when it comes to self defense, no one should be prosecuted for being a victim of domestic abuse. When the case is heard and police come to the cry of domestic violence, police arrests either the male victim or both parties. If a woman tried to switch is around towards the man being the abuser, both parties should be taken into custody until evidence proves clear of one.

Although, if murder is brought into it, even if it is by accident by the victim, they should be sentence to prison, at least for minimal sentence. Women are able to get out of prison, but what makes it right for men to stay? Men are also victims in the abuse, but if women get to walk free after murdering someone and calling it self defense, why don’t men get to walk free after defending their selves in a lesser act.
