What is HGIS ?— or your 5 minute welcome to GIS.
I : What is a ‘HGIS’?
A quick overview of what GIS technology is…
When you are creating locations on a map using GIS technology you are creating a spatial database. Every location has descriptive information about it that makes it important. This data is referred to as ‘attribute data’. The data is stored in an attribute table similar to Excel.
But, before there were computers:
And as technology has advanced — GIS analysis has gone from using paper wall maps of a city that have been colorized to show an important trend, to employing computer technology. Here is an example of how GIS can be performed on a paper map, and on a digital map:
II : What is the relationship between the Map and the data?
We can bring together many layers of information to understand how the location of one phenomenon has impact on another. From this interaction; we can construct a data-story around the locations and interactions of different pieces of information.
What is it today?
GIS technology has advanced to a place where users can leverage mapping software to build databases of important historical events, people and organizations.
