Whoever told you that is not correct. When you convert to Judaism, you meet with a beit din – 3 jews (often Rabbis) and upon their approval, you immerse in the mikveh – you are fully jewish from that moment on. The requirements for conversion often vary (take a course, meet with rabbis to learn, demonstrate leading a jewish life by engaging in jewish practices, attend prayer services, observe Shabbat, etc) but once you are “approved” by the beit din & ceremony of immersion, you’re considered fully jewish. I’m sorry you received such poor advice.
