Shut the “eff” up — Just shut up and listen more: Something that I do before each meeting is open up a note pad and write “shut” on the top left-hand corner and “up” on the top right-hand corner. When I wanted to say something, I circled them. There have been times where I actually punch a corner out of the paper, because I am so desperate to say something.

Stop using too many tools. To fill the need of saving time, we fall into the trap of using too many tools. This ends up wasting our time more than it saves it. Because what happens is that you create more information gathering points. If you have to look for information in too many directions, it wastes your time and instead of making you more productive, these tools make you way less efficient. Its more wisely to choose a couple that helps you organize your workload and get rid of the rest.

Don’t be afraid to ask. I had two men hang around Groove With Me until I finally asked them to join the board. They said, “What took you so long?” We think that we’re imposing on others. But they want to be asked. Remember: if someone isn’t interested, they can easily say no.

There are 10,000 things I wish people understood, but most importantly I wish people knew how many false stereotypes are still out there for people with disabilities. Some people automatically assume that if an individual has a physical disability, they must have a mental disability, when in reality — there’s nothing wrong with my mind, my disability is physical. I unfortunately don’t expect this stereotype to go away anytime soon until people start to understand better what it’s like to live with a physical limitation.

It’s so important for everyone to know their worth. Not only do I run the organization but I am hands-on with the youth. That takes so much time and effort but it’s crucial. For me, my worth is beyond running an organization. I’m literally saving lives. I am pleased that my board and others recognize my worth as well.

Communicate effectively. We had multiple hands-on discussions with executives and department heads in the early days of COVID-19 for insight into what they were seeing and thinking, and to problem-solve. Leadership is best defined as one helping others achieve their best. Think servant-leadership. With my daughters, my leadership job as their father is to provide them with their basic needs and the education, experiences, and other support for them to succeed in life.
