Are you a SWE who joined a new company? Read this!

I have switched jobs couple of times in the last 8 years for various reasons. Everytime I moved to a new company, it felt like building my software engineering journey from scratch! But actually no, you will quickly adapt to the new work culture based on your experience :)

I’m a Senior SWE who has joined a new company!

What were my initial thoughts?

I was happy and excited that I could make an offer in the current tough market!

Excitement and Opportunity-

What’s New — You’re ready to take up new challenges.

Skill Development — A new company might offer opportunities to learn new technologies, frameworks, working methodologies thus expanding your skillset.

Career Growth — The switch could be a stepping stone to accomplish future goals or a more specialized role for your skill-set.

Improved Work Culture — May be the new company offers a better work-life balance, a culture that will align with your values.

What’s next?

Anxiety :

How can I help?

I can take notes, get you coffee, manage your calendar, set goals for you, walk your dog, carry your things, work-out for you, watch you sleep! Blaaaaaaaa. blaaaaa

Where can I put my stuff? Inside out pun :) If you have watched this movie, you will get it. If not, please go watch :)

Okay let’s get back!

Uncertainty ,Apprehension and Anxiety:

Learning Curve — There will be new code-base, team dynamics and a new work culture which you need to adapt to! This can be daunting at first :)

Fitting in — Building rapport with new colleagues and proving your value in the new team can take time.

Meeting Expectations — There is definitely a pressure to perform well and meet the expectations of your new manager and team.

Unknown Risks — You might be unsure about the company’s future, project stability, or leadership, leading to some apprehension.

In Conclusion,

Overall switching jobs can be exciting, challenging, stressful but definitely a worth-while experience :) There is always two sides of a coin!

I end it here believing I can do epic things at my new role! Looking forward to make impacts :)

Note to self : Always start your day with a grateful heart, remember what you did to be here and believe you can do epic things :)

Thanks for reading! Keep watching this space for more such stories :)
