I’m sorry that you have first hand experience with the issue too. Intense emotions are often the cause as you just need a release, something to escape those emotions for a little while at least. I want you to know that you’re not alone in having struggled with it, though I’m glad you are managing emotions in a way that isn’t self-harm now and have been for so long. That shows great strength. I bet you love your tattoo! ❤️

I wrote this piece without talking directly about my own experience in the way that I usually would – but I’ve battled with the desire to hurt myself (and the consequences of feeling like that) for over 15 years now. I too have a tattoo to cover parts of my arm – I now want tattoos to cover other parts of my body too.
