As a founder of GE, Thomas Edison set a humble example of grit when his factory burned down in the early 1900s — he reminded us that with every setback comes an unanticipated gift. Growing up, I was always taught that absolutely everything happens for a reason, and I truly believe there is a path-altering lesson in every second of our days (no matter how similar or vastly different each second may appear, and no matter how long it might take us to realize those lessons). Tragedy will remain tragic if we let it, but tragedy can lead to triumph if we grow comfortable with the unknown and remain open to change.
