It’s not simply a website. It’s a marketplace. It’s a database. It’s transactionary. It interfaces with other databases. It must handle huge amounts of traffic, storage and security. Granted, this could probably all have been built for less money than that, but to give you perspective, a new student information system (class schedules, etc) for a university costs about $50M — which I think is also over-priced.
