“Had a little confusion at the drugstore. Decided when Dale comes home to quit & never work there again. Too much responsibility. Went to show tonight. Saw Ann Miller in some picture. Was good. ‘Night.”

Mema worked at the local drugstore. I was almost certain that it was Walgreens but I can’t confirm that just yet.

She was 18 and managing the other girls at the drugstore. It seemed like such responsibility for an 18 year old.

Throughout her life, she would continue to work at what she called “dime stores” including Walgreens, Woolworth’s, and Perry Brothers.

She didn’t specify which Ann Miller movies she went to see but I found two movies with this star.

1. Eadie Was a Lady

In this movie, a woman’s secret job as a nightclub dancer gets her expelled from college.

2. Eve Knew Her Apples

A radio singer ditches her hectic schedule for a Vegas trip against her manager’s wishes.

She hides in a reporter’s car, who thinks she’s the escaped convict, “The Singing Widow,” leading to chaos and unexpected romance.

If I had to guess, she went to see Eadie Was a Lady. My Mema definitely loved a good, scandalous story, whether it was in a book or a movie.

Out of curiosity, I started going down the rabbit hole and I wondered what else was going on in the world.

On this same day, the US, Great Britain, and China issued the Potsdam Declaration at the Potsdam Conference, near the end of World War II.

The declaration was an ultimatum demanding Japan’s unconditional surrender.
