5 Steps to Stop Living Boring

Just so you know, you have about 28,000 days to live. If you’re reading this in your early 20s, that number has already dropped down to about 18,000.

What are we doing with our limited number of days? We tend to be creatures of habit. We take the same route to work, we talk to the same people, and we find things that validate our assumptions instead of challenging what we know. Why can’t every day be an opportunity to do something daring and different?

1 // Plan for Greatness EVERY day

Most of us plan for exciting things in the future: that trip to Europe next year, that concert next month, that date next week. But what are we doing in between these milestones? The in-between days become a gray, goopy filler. We do what we’re told, we go through the motions, and we stay safely in our comfort zone. If we want to stop living boring, we need to plan for greatness TODAY. The first step to stop living boring is make a conscious effort to plan your filler days in advance. Is there a meet-up in your area on a topic that interests you? Make the effort to go and then GO. Finding opportunities in your everyday life to learn and meet new people makes your life and by association YOU more interesting.

2 // Roll a Dice

This one is not for the faint of heart. It involves rolling a pair of dice to make decisions. Even numbers means you bike to work, odd numbers and you take the bus. See a menu with a numbered list? Roll the dice to pick your meal or Starbucks drink. Make up your own criteria for what the numbers mean and see what happens! It’s an easy way to make a split second decision and spice up your life at the same time.

3 // Dare to notice, speak, & act

We are exposed to so much stimuli in a day that our brain labels a lot of this incoming stimuli as unimportant. In other words, we simply don’t notice half of what’s going on in our environment. It’s time to rewire our brains to notice the important stuff again. Put down your phone on the bus and talk to the human being sitting next to you. Try talking to a stranger like they are an old friend. Everyone has a story and experiences that are unique to them, including you. Who knows, you may share a lesson with someone that will change their life. The same possibility holds true for the lessons you might learn from a stranger. The gist here is notice your surroundings and dare to get out of your bubble.

4 // Channel your inner kid

Remember when you were a kid brimming with questions and absorbing the world with fresh eyes? I guarantee you that curious, playful, weird, daring, speak your mind type of youthful energy is still hanging around somewhere inside you. Ask questions without holding back, and be vulnerable to the mysteries of the world around you. If you live for today with a lighter heart, you’ll start to notice the adventures waiting in your daily life.

5 // Follow the Make Today Great way

We all want to look back and be proud of the milestones AND the in-between days. That means for the next year, I’m going to make each and every day great by living my passions, loving each day, and sharing the inspiration. I’m calling it the Make Today Great way. It’s about turning an unmemorable moment into something worth remembering. Because moments turn into days and before you know it, days become our entire lives. Join me in a journey to Make Today Great and stop living boring once and for all.
