My passion for a career

“Career” is a funny word. Some people define it as simple as their job — what they do for a living, their 9-5, their way of putting money on the table.

I define it as something I’m working towards every day. For me, it needs to pair up with the word “passion”. Every job I’ve had so far has tried to make me see them as a career. As grateful as I am for the opportunity and experience of working at marketing companies, doing various sales and admin jobs; they’re kidding if they think I want a career out of it. A job to make money while I’m at uni is totally different to a career. I’m still studying and a part of me thinks I know what I’m striving towards, but some days are harder than others. I know I’m only 20 but I was discussing with my friend the other day about how every day seems to go a tad quicker than the day before. I feel like I woke up and I’m suddenly in my 20s with no huge landmark in my life. Nothing that makes me say “Oh yep, this happened to me and it completely changed my life for the better.” I don’t want to wake up in my 40s and be in the same situation.

I don’t want to stay where I am. I want to move up in life every day, bit by bit. I know I shouldn’t compare myself to other people but I just feel like some of my friends have just got it going for them. They’ve all got a particular talent or something they’re good at and I’m really happy for them. I just wish I was the same. One of my friends is studying to become a nurse — she’s amazing and caring and her career fits her personality like a glove. Some of my other friends are so musically talented, and even if they don’t think anything huge will come out of this hobby of theirs, I know they are going places — I’m calling it first! I want to have the same passion for something as my friend does for music. It’s extremely inspiring to see him sing and play music. I know he will strive and be successful in all that he does. He will absolutely have a career in music and I wish him all the best. You see — that’s what a career is. Something you’re working hard towards, something you love, something you’d happily wake up to for the rest of your life and something you never have to press the snooze button for.
