Now that Terre Magazine’s first edition has landed in readers’ hands around the globe, we’re open for pitches for Issue 2!

If you are a writer, artist, or photographer, read on to find out how your work can be considered for Terre. To those of you who might just be hearing of Terre, and didn’t get a chance to find a copy (and don’t have a stockist near you), we don’t want to disadvantage you; if you want to read a copy of the magazine so as to better prepare your pitches, reach out and we’ll get you something to look at.

Issue 2 will go to print late spring, which means that in most cases, all reporting would need to be finished by sometime in February in order for deadlines to be met.

As you may already know if you’ve been following our growth since our successful Kickstarter last spring, Terre aims to highlight the concept of terroir through fantastic storytelling — visual, as well as text. While natural, artisanal, and terroir-driven winemaking is one of our strong points, we are very interested to features stories centered on food, coffee, tobacco, tea, spirits, marijuana, chocolate, and female entrepreneurs working in these realms. Artwork is a huge focus for Terre; there are no graphics in the first issue, only hand-made artwork and original photography. That’s a bonus for writers who may be used to seeing their hard work displayed alongside boring stock photos.

With the exception of Interviews, all articles should involve original, first-hand reportage and research. (No phoning in!) The journalist is welcome to make suggestions for accompanying artwork or photography. Artists and photographers: we would love to hear your ideas for visual essays (with the option to include an outside writer to provide intro or commentary).

All contributors (including artists and photographers) are offered payment, to be discussed once a submission is under consideration. Our rates may not be as high as we’d like, but we do our best given that we are independent, ad-free, and don’t pay ourselves for running the magazine. We are, unfortunately, unable to provide compensation for travel.

PLEASE create titles for your pitches and feel free to send multiple ideas in one batch! And do send samples of published work.

Thank you for your interest in working with us — we’re excited to find out what ideas will come our way for Issue 2 and beyond!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

• interviews with female entrepreneurs in food/wine/drink/beyond (see “PolkaPanks” interview in Issue 1)

• personal (and perhaps funny!) essays about first-hand experiences with the concept of terroir (see “Pretty Little Lies” in Issue 1)

• natural winemaker profiles — first hand journalism (“natural wine” here refers to: organic vineyards, indigenous yeasts, and nothing added except minimal amounts of sulfur; not restricted to growers only)

• interviews with naturally-working winemakers

• features on heritage foods — well researched and creatively written stories or visual essays about grains, varieties of fruit or veg, animals, etc, who have older histories and may be on brink of disappearing (we’d love a recipe in narrative form, too)

• “a day in the life” column (see “A Summer Tuesday at Ordinaire” in Issue 1) — a writer on-staff at a wine bar or shop or restaurant offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse

• photo and visual essays about any of the above and beyond

• well-researched stories about small batch, terroir driven spirits (see Issue 1’s feature on mezcal in Michoacán for an example)

NOT INTERESTED IN:

• stories sponsored by large brands

• listicles

• phoned-in journalism

• cocktail recipes

• profiles of winemakers or other makers that don’t reveal the specialness of a place (ie no profiles of hired oenologists or celebrity chefs; also just because a vineyard is farmed biodynamically doesn’t mean it’s worth writing about)

Pitches for Issue 2 should be sent by Jan 20 to Rachel, Erika, and Katie at terremag@gmail.com with the subject line including the words “author/artist/photography” — (whichever applies to you) — “pitches for Terre Issue 2.”

Please allow 2–3 weeks for response. Thank you!

Yours,

Rachel, Erika and Katie | Co-founders, Terre Magazine
