What an incredibley myopic article. And this coming from a supposed college professor. Back then and even during washington’s time, a person’s loyalty was strongest towards his state, not his country. Washington and others of his time struggled to get the colonies to unite against England. By Lee’s time, there was still a very strong anti-federal sentiment among many Americans, as probably there should be today considering the lack of leadership coming from D.C. So Lee, just as many others were, was loyal to his state first. Considering he was well kknown as a man of principle, it should be understandable why he chose the way he did, even to so called professors. On the subject of our federal goverment during Lee’s time, Lincoln was the first to abolish Hebeaus Corpus and the first to establish the draft which was widely hated and removed after the war. Lincoln himself said the war was not to free the negro but to hold together the union. That line of thought did not come about until after Gettysburg when it became politically expediant. Considering most colleges are socialist hotbeds these days, its no wonder this tripe came from one.
