How to Install Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS Server on VirtualBox

  1. Download Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS ISO

Download the Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS server edition ISO from the official Ubuntu download page: Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS ISO.

Minimum requirements for installation:

  • 2 GHz dual-core processor or better
  • 4 GB memory
  • 25 GB of free Hard disk space

2. Install VirtualBox

Ensure you have VirtualBox installed on your host operating system. You can download and install VirtualBox from its official website.

3. Create Virtual Machine

3.1. Open VirtualBox and click on the “New” button to create a new virtual machine.

3.2. Name your virtual machine (e.g., “Ubuntu 22.04”), select Type as Linux, and Version as Ubuntu.

3.3. Allocate RAM for the virtual machine. For optimal performance, assign at least 4GB of RAM if installing the server with a desktop interface.

3.4. Create a virtual hard disk with around 30GB of virtual space. Choose the “Dynamic Allocated” option.

3.5. In the VM settings, set paravirtualization and configure the network adapter.

4. Start Ubuntu 22.04 Server Virtual Machine

Select the newly created virtual machine from the VirtualBox panel and click Start.

5. Grub Menu and Boot

When the virtual machine starts, you’ll see the Grub menu. Select “Try or Install Ubuntu Server” to proceed.

6. Installation Wizard

Follow the installation wizard: select the language and accept the default keyboard layout.

7. Choose Server Installation

Select the default server installation option.

8. Network Connections

Ubuntu server will automatically detect and select the network connection. You can customize it if needed. Skip the Proxy configuration and proceed.

9. Disk Partitioning

Choose to erase the disk and install Ubuntu 22.04 server. Confirm your choice and proceed.

10. Set Username and Password

Create a user profile for the server. Optionally, install OpenSSH Server for remote access. Complete the setup to initiate the installation process.

11. Set Root Password

After installation, switch to the root user and set a password:

sudo -i
passwd

Enter a new password for the root user.
