5 Reasons to consider remote working in your I.T. company
I have worked for two years as a remote developer, and I can say that it was the happiest time of my developer career, I have learned a lot with this experience and I’d like to share 5 reasons that I think you should consider remote working as an option for your business.
1 — It is good for your pockets
Do you realize how much money companies spend with employee transportantion? And with food, with water and energy bills, not to mention that you will probably have to rent an office, and if the office is too big, you’ll end up hiring someone to take care of the cleaning and all those kinds of stuff. You can save a LOT of money if you adopt the remote working culture in your company.
2 — Your employees will be happier
How much time do you currently spend going from your home to your company’s office and from the office back to your home? If you live in a busy city like São Paulo, chances are that you spend at least two hours of your day only to go from your place to the office and going back home afterwards. If your employees could use those precious hours to do anything else rather than getting stuck in a public transportation for two hours a day, I’m sure that they would have many reasons to feel happier, and we all know that happy developers means more work getting well done throughout the day.
3 — More flexibility at work
We all know that developers are crazy people, and crazy people have crazy habits. Some people (not only developers) just absolutely HATE to wake up too early (and yes, I’m one of those), so waking up early to start working, or even earlier because you need to spend 1 hour going to the office turns out to become a daily torture for this kind of people, and some of us just feel more productive during the nightime, would your office be available for a crazy developer to come in and work from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.? I don’t think so.
4 — Dress comfortably
Anyone who has experienced remote working knows how good it feels to spend all the day in comfortable clothing, be it in pajamas, or without a shirt and using only shorts (just don’t forget to put a shirt on during the online meetings!). In my opinion, the most comfortable a person is, the better is the work this person does.
5 — Remote working teaches discipline
With great power, comes great responsibility, if you give your employees the choice of working from their home, in their own environment and with some flexibility of time, you naturally expect them to deliver stuff on time and, believe it or not, when you work as a remote developer, you will feel that you should start becoming more disciplined and remove distractions when you are in your work time, because you enjoy the job and the home office culture so much that you’ll naturally want to be more productive in your team.
What do you think about those reasons? If you have another reasons to point out, say it on the comments ;)
