I thought we had seen the worst when Sarah Palin was running 4 years ago.
But now the GOP is having Donald Trump. New limits have bene pushed. It’s not so much that I hate the Republicans but rather this question that I keep wondering about. Why can’t the Republicans have a candidate that is normal? Someone who believes in conservatism, family and business while trying to keep evolving with the present?
As a foreigner living in the US for almost 20 years, I have become more emotional with the politics.
I live here and I believe this country is one of the greatest. People work hard, people can pursue big dreams, the country is beautiful, freedom of expression, some of the best universities, and the “made in America” is something that can feel good.
But with the latest elections, the medias have catapulted Donald Trump to such a level. Some may start to realize how destructive he could be as a president. How is he going to talk to the rest of the world? Do we want the rest of the world to hate us and send more terrorists over here?
On the other side, we have Bernie and Hillary. I like them both. I’ve been feeling the Bern factor too. But now I am having serious questions, and hearing his 1% rhetoric all the time is starting to get me tired. I want him to talk about gun control, how he will deal with the Senate, how he will talk with Wall Street, how he plans to pay for all these free goody bags. And please stop talking about Sweden. It’s like telling someone who he’s looking to finally exchange his SUV for a hybrid car that he should instead buy a bicycle…
I am from Switzerland, not to confuse with Sweden. I keep hearing about how great is Sweden, but honestly, this is not the best model for the US. Sure I like change, and sometimes dramatic change is needed. But my worries with Bernie is that is just going to put more oil on the fire for the next 4 years and nothing will be changed. It’s only going to make things even worst: Republicans and Democrats will hate each other even more. I am worry that Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump divisive solutions could bring some violence, either within our own people or from outside.
I want to like Hillary. She has experience, she’s smart, she has balls and she knows how to answer. But something bothers me about her: she’s too perfect. I can’t relate to her!
But then I ask myself, why would I like someone with flaws, who behaves poorly, like Trump? I think the concept to have a president that is like us is really wrong. Journalists ask people who they would like to have a beer with, or candidates wear shirts that look like the plumber.
There is a disconnect between what we need and what like. And this may be the problem. We should ask ourselves this simple question: if one day we are facing the justice, do we want a lawyer that wear a casual shirt, talks like a bar buddy? Or do we want a sharp, well dressed, charismatic lawyer that can defend us?
