HOW TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT CHANGE MY LIFE?

I believe: “Quality makes standards and peaks up everything.”

This is my own story about a subject that I studied in my last semester of BBA. This subject is related to supply chain field and by this subject I learned about how quality can be maintained not only in an organization but also in real life. I relate the concepts of TQM to my real life that helps me understand the topics and it’s concepts in a more clear way. So, there are some principles of TQM that I will be discussing here and that indicates how my life was before studying TQM and how my life is now, after studying TQM. Here, I am assuming myself as a customer who is never satisfied and always want to have new and innovative things in an organized manner which comes from total quality management. The principles discuss below:

1) LEAN MANAGEMENT:

So, the first principle that I believe changed my life is WASTE ELIMINATION or LEAN MANAGEMENT. Since, it’s all about eliminating the products, materials, activities or anything that is not adding value whether it’s in your home, organization or life.

Before studying TQM, there were many things that were unorganized in my life like my room, my cupboards, bookshelf and my laptop. Moreover, I waste my time on many unnecessary things that can be invested in a more valuable way. I have so many clothes that were no more useful as I won’t wear them so they were taking extra place to be kept which has limited the space for my clothes that I wear regularly, my room is so outspread that I can’t even find my things required daily, my bookshelf is so dusty and all the books were mixed up that creates difficulty in finding the subject books that I need, my laptop’s desktop is full of files that are not needed anymore or irrelevant. I waste my time in watching movies that don’t even generate any knowledge for me nor helpful in anyway.

Therefore, after studying TQM, I realized the importance of organizing the things that makes my life easier and helps me to find the things I required on a daily basis and save my time. Now, I take out the clothes that are not required and set the cupboard in a proper manner, I set my bookshelf in a way that each subject and semester books are in a particular shelf with no dust, I organized my room that creates more space and let me feel comfortable, I make the folders in my laptop that creates easiness in finding the files that I need to study. Lastly, I invest my time on things that are valuable for me in every way like I watch the seasons related to my field that build knowledge and invest my time in searching for my career job and articles related to supply chain and instead of wasting time on chatting, I invest my time in recitation of Quran so that I can retain Holy Quran in my heart forever. Instead of wasting time by sleeping, I use my spare time in revising my Web design course so that I can support it with my field. So, now I try to be a multitasked person and instead of giving time on a single task, I divide my time to different tasks so that I can achieve all on time.

2) CHECKLISTS:

Since, Checklists are used as a reminder and helps achieving daily tasks and goals and make it visible. So, before studying TQM I never used checklists which creates difficulties in achieving my daily tasks that is, assignments, project reports, quizzes, giving time to family and friends and so many things.

But, after studying TQM, I started making checklist daily that helps me achieve all the tasks on time before deadline and now, I am also able to give time to my family and can hang out with my friends. I have made a particular notebook in which I daily write the tasks that I have to achieve in a week. I mentioned all the weekly tasks in my to do list like project reports submission, quiz, assignments submission, CV update, Apply for jobs etc.

3) PDCA (PLAN, DO, CHECK, ACT):

This cycle is used for continuous improvements and to achieve a goal through a step by step process.

PLAN:

In planning phase we establish our expectations and what we want to achieve and where we want to go?

For example; I want to lose 3 pounds in a month and also to shape up the body. So, I have to follow a proper diet plan in which I will mention the weekly targets that what to eat, drink, physical fitness related activities like; walk, gym etc.

DO:

In this phase, we execute the plan by actually doing it and by bringing up and eat the things necessary to fulfill the plan like; healthy foods, meat, vegetables, sugar free biscuits, green tea, beans etc.

CHECK:

Here, we compare the expectations with outcome. That is; after a month, I will check whether I lose weight or not? If not, why not? What more should be needed and what to avoid.

ACT:

Here, I will notice if the results are achieved in the check phase then maintain it with continuous improvement and if not achieved, I will change the diet plan or change daily routine so that I can reach at a desired result and make improvements.

Therefore, before studying TQM, I have no idea about this concept but after TQM I can achieve my aim like I have implement it in my weight loss objective.

4) EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:

As we all know that communication is a key element in every aspect of our life, whether it’s our Home, organization, office, university etc. If we cannot communicate properly, others will never understand what we want to say and the desired result cannot be achieved. Therefore, before studying TQM, I did not realize much importance of communication but after studying TQM I get to know how to integrate the conversation in a team and how effectively can we deliver the ideas, it may be through presentations, general, talks, meetings, interviews with company head etc. Communication can be verbal or non-verbal, so I improve my communication through writing this blog and sharing my ideas with the world.

5) 5S HOUSEKEEPING:

Since, this concept is used to improve quality and work environment which increases efficiency and productivity. I will be discussing real life example below that how I implement this concept:

1) SORTING: I eliminate the books from my bookshelf that are not necessary or required, I delete the documents from my laptop and sort important documents in folders. I have folder for notes on my bookshelf so that they cannot mixed up with books.

2) SELF-ARRANGEMENT: I make folders for each semester in my laptop and in it I make each subject folder which helps me find anything quickly from the named folders. I have set the priorities for a day like I have to wake up for Fajar then I recite Quran then I went to university, came back and sleep, woke up and complete my others tasks and so on. I have arranged my clothes in a proper manner in my cupboard so that I can find what to wear easily.

3) SPIC AND SPAN: I keep my room and bookshelf clean so that I can feel comfortable working here. It motivates me to work for longer time and maintain the quality of everything.

4) STANDARDIZING: I have set the standards as rules that I should keep my cupboard, bookshelf, laptop and room clean. I fix time for each activity so that everything can be done daily at their specific time.

5) SELF-DISCIPLINE: I am very punctual to attend classes, I fulfill my commitments with others for the meetings like hang out with friends, meeting with my team mates for project reports etc. Here, I also check whether the previous 4S are implementing correctly or not.

Therefore, through this technique I came to know how to keep my things clean and at the correct place as before studying this concept in TQM, my things were messed up all around and I always felt worried about my things.

CONCLUSION: In the last, I would just like to mention that TQM teaches me a lot and it helps me improve many things in life as these concepts make me realize how I can organize things and improve the quality and maintain excellence in every phase of my life.
