Hi Dan,

Congrats on starting your journey of with a bang!

I have a somewhat similar backstory to yours, except I finished Uni first (no debt required, thanks to Norway’s policies).

I am always happy to read stories like yours, as you found something that you actually enjoyed doing, and was able to use that to fund long term travel (instead of just staying in Chiang Mai on alternating visas for years without paying taxes and calling yourself a nomad).

About 4 years ago I went to Thailand with big dreams, but ended up becoming completely disillusioned with the work I was doing (writing listicles/how-to articles about WordPress, etc), because the work felt pretty empty and meaningless, and because I was slowly going crazy from staying inside my apartment too much and not having a community around me.

I also found it hard to make meaningful friendships as I kept meeting mostly other travelers when I was staying somewhere for a while, or I was the traveler.

I ended up taking a job as an English teacher at a private school, making new friends and spending 2 really fun (although maybe not very professionally developmental) years in Chiang Mai, found out I enjoyed teaching and working with kids, before moving on and starting down the same road again, just smarter about it(although now I’m working as a digital marketer in Tokyo to build some experience and a portfolio in a field I truly enjoy, before trying something similar again).

Hope you are doing better than I was and have a good community around you and a fulfilling life on the road!

And I hope to bump into you one day as well, when I’m back on the road myself.

Good luck!

    Ragnar
