The first human patient of Neuralink, which was founded by billionaire Elon Musk, underwent a brain chip implant on Sunday and is doing well, the startup said on Monday. Musk posted on the social networking site X that the preliminary findings point to a promising neuron spike-detecting system. Neuralink’s first human experiment was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration last year, which was a big step forward for the development of brain-computer interface technology.

In a different X post, Musk disclosed that “Telepathy” will be the name of Neuralink’s first product. This announcement is a component of the startup’s PRIME Study, an experiment assessing the surgical robot’s and wireless brain-computer interface’s safety.

The goal of the study is to evaluate the interface’s functionality to enable people who are paralyzed or quadriplegic to operate equipment with their thoughts. September of the previous year was when Neuralink started recruiting for the study trial.

Despite these developments, Neuralink’s safety procedures have come under fire. According to recent reports, the corporation was fined for breaking regulations set forth by the US Department of Shipment about the shipment of hazardous chemicals. When four US congressmen urged the US Securities and Exchange Commission to look into whether Musk had committed securities fraud, the level of attention surrounding Musk increased in November. The main focus of the claim was that Neuralink may have given investors false information regarding the safety of their brain implant.

Although there is still little information available regarding the first human experiment, Neuralink has made great progress toward achieving its goal of improving human capacities through brain-computer interface technology with successful implantation. The startup’s continued achievements highlight the revolutionary potential of such innovations in the field of medical technology and human augmentation, even as it navigates regulatory difficulties and safety concerns.
