India’s Political Revolution
This past week, India’s long awaited political revolution finally took off. The Aam Admi Party, founded on principles of anti-corruption and governance by the comman man, took control of the local government of Delhi, India’s capital and a city of over 20 million people. All throughout the city people celebrated. The local clothes presser, or dhobi, in my grandparents’ neighborhood went to go see the swearing-in ceremony of the new party. The workers at the famous Paratha Gully in Chadni Chowk took the white caps of the AAP supporters and members and donned them on with pride. As they served parathas, I could feel a sense of pride and excitement in the air.
Whether or not the AAP is successful is yet to be determined, but the face of the government of India will be forever changed. Corruption will no longer be accepted as the status quo because the general public has seen that their vote can make a difference. The population of India feels empowered. The average man/woman feels his/her voice heard. After being ruled by kings, the British, and corrupt politicians, India finally feels a sense of hope.
