So you have been chosen as the best man. The feeling is quite special, isn’t it? From being one of the many guests at the wedding, you are now the go-to person for the most important man in the wedding.

Now all that you have to do is throw an epic stag party, make sure the groom makes it to the church, and deliver an epic speech! Right? Wrong!

Being a best man involves a lot more than that. In fact, in many cases, people underestimate their responsibility as the best man, and end up not only ruining the wedding, but their relationship with their best friend.

Throw an epic stag party

Sure, this one might be obvious. However, it is important to not get too excited and concentrate on what the groom likes. You might want to spend the weekend in a strip club, but the groom may like to get his pulse pumping with adventure sports.

The stag party will only be considered epic if the groom thinks so. So make sure you make the day or the weekend about them.

Additionally, think about others that are going to be involved in the celebration, especially when you’re budgeting for the party. Not everyone may be able to afford a weekend in Norway.

Lastly, keep in mind that while throwing a great stag party with fun stag do activities is certainly a substantially important responsibility, being a best man is more than throwing an epic party.

Be the support system to the groom

The bride has an army of bridesmaids supporting her, while the groom just has you. A wedding is a big decision and requires enormous amounts of preparedness and courage. To make sure your best buddy doesn’t get nervous, make sure you are always available to them.

Being the support system doesn’t just stop at emotional support. You have to ensure the groom makes it to the (right) church on time, not hungover, without any criminal charges hanging over his head. Similarly, since the big lad would be super-busy during the wedding, make sure you address any vendors or issues during the ceremony, before they reach the groom.

Deliver the best speech ever

Can you count the number of bad wedding speeches you have had to endure? Would you believe none of the people giving the speech felt their speech was bad, at least not while they were delivering it?

Most people think they are great orators, and then the alcohol kicks in. To make sure you truly deliver a great speech:

  • Stay sober.
  • Start preparing well in advance. This will give you plenty of time to perfect the speech and practice the deliver.
  • Don’t swear, there will be children and old folks listening to your speech.
  • Keep it short, nobody wants to listen to a drunken rambling.
  • Do not mention any exes, or what you really did on the stag do.

Keep in mind, the quality of your speech will determine whether you’re going home with the bridesmaid of your choice, or getting thrown out of the wedding by the bride’s angry cousins.

Conclusion

Being a best man may not be an easy task, but it is certainly well worth the effort. Make sure you do all the things mentioned above to make the groom proud of his decision of choosing you as his best man.
