Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Introduction

“GPS Attendance System” for the educational institutions helps the concerned authorities by transforming the manual way of doing attendance into the computerized modern way. It is a web-based project which aims to make attendance by the students themselves through the Internet. It is suitable for universities, colleges, schools, and institutes. Students can make their attendance directly through their mobiles and laptops. Administrative authorities need not take any burden regarding the presence of their students. This system takes the responsibility of management for doing attendance by introducing the GPS-based automated attendance into the system. For this, only the restriction is that attendee must be within the specified coverage area of location. Such type of location coverage is determined based on allowed points of longitudes and latitudes for any organization behalf of which system is serving. To make this concept practical, we use Vincenty inverse formula. Vincenty inverse method is used to calculate the geographical distance and azimuth between two points on the surface of a spheroid [1]. Methods regarding Vincenty formulae are based on the assumption that the figure of the Earth is an oblate spheroid [2].
