1. Develop a podcast concept

Finding an appealing podcast concept to attract listeners while maintaining commitment is integral for creating and running successful shows.

Follow these strategies to focus your niche and clarify your message.

Set Goals What do you hope to gain by starting a podcast? Understanding why will help ensure success, even if that means just having some fun together.

Launch a podcast: What are its key advantages?

Podcasting offers many advantages to businesses and brands alike; but in order for it to achieve these goals effectively it must remain realistic about its goals and attainable objectives.

Not every podcaster wants to reach fame immediately; most will focus on building an organic following over time.

Choose an engaging theme or topic for your podcast A theme or topic you enjoy exploring regularly should make you excited to discuss and research, lessening chances of podfade.

Once you have some ideas in mind, conduct market research to understand who are competing within your genre.

Search the Apple Podcasts directory for episodes related to your topic of show, listen carefully, and consider ways you could change them for maximum impact.

There’s always an interesting point of view or angle to offer.

PRO TIP

To test out your podcast concept, brainstorm 10 episode ideas — if they do not come easily then change topics!

Create Niche interet

By targeting specific niches, podcasters can build a more targeted and engaged audience than ones which aim to appeal to a broad demographic. Broad-minded podcasts may reach only some people.

People tend to recommend niche podcasts more readily than generic ones.

Focusing your podcast content around an area or demographic niche can help ensure its success.

Investigate what makes your podcast distinctive. What unique perspective are you providing on its subject matter?

Name your podcast

Your podcast name should make a strong first impression with listeners and set the stage for all that lies ahead in its journey.

Apple provides this advice on naming your podcast:

Establish a distinctive name for your podcast to ensure maximum subscription rates; something as generic as Our Community Bulletin will simply not attract the right subscribers.

Apple Podcasts searches this field exclusively. Pay careful consideration when selecting titles as Apple uses this field for search functionality.

Podcast names should be clear, concise, and unique. They should be easy to remember and pronounce, and they should reflect the content of your podcast. If possible, choose a name that is similar to your business name or brand.

2. Select Your Podcast Format

The ideal format should complement and foster sustainable development of your podcast series.

Ask yourself what brings out your energy — whether that be connecting with podcast guests or preferring solo endeavors?

If you decide to have cohosts, try keeping your group small; podcasting with more than two or three hosts makes scheduling difficult.

Always bear in mind that different shows require differing amounts of production work — fiction podcasts may require additional editing than interview programs, for instance.

Here are a few popular podcast formats:

Interview Podcasts/Cohosted Podcasts; scripted nonfiction (news recap/ educational vlog s)/scripted fiction: When choosing your episode length for podcasting, be mindful that each should only take as long as necessary and no more.

Many podcast episodes run under five minutes long; others can go as long as an audiobook. Below are the most commonly encountered episode lengths:

Buzzsprout Platform Statistics provided for an overall participation rate of 14% with 10–20 minutes recorded as 15–31% for 20–40 minute and 21–24 hour sessions (see Chart 3 below)

Podcast publishing schedule

Podcasting can be either full-time job or something done as a side project; publishing schedule options range from daily publication such as Serial’s daily episode release schedule.

As part of building relationships with listeners and cultivating the habit of producing consistent content, we suggest publishing at least once every week — these are some common publishing frequencies:

Buzzsprout Platform Statistics provide more details. 0–2 Days (7%) or 3–7 Days (36%); 8–14 days(39%)

15–29 days (17%) for completion

3. Select Your Podcast Recording Equipment

To have great audio for a podcast, it isn’t necessary to purchase expensive equipment; many popular podcasts already utilise basic setups that give them excellent results.

Let’s review what to consider when shopping for a podcast microphone and then present our top recommendations.

Best podcast microphones A top quality microphone will improve audio quality and editing considerably — less background noise means less edits afterward!

Before purchasing your first podcast mic, here are a few factors you should take into consideration. Our top recommendation is the Samson Q2U microphone available from Amazon at around $70.

Dynamic or condenser For podcasting purposes, dynamic microphones offer the best results. Their low frequencies and reduced sensitivity make editing out background noise easier later.

Condenser mics have greater sensitivity, picking up on more frequencies. Their increased sensitivity makes them ideal for recording music; however, for spoken-word recordings it might not be ideal.

Podcast mics come equipped with either an XLR or USB connection for easier operation.

XLR mics provide you with maximum versatility. There is an extensive selection of these microphones on the market and they tend to last a long time; however, an interface or mixer may be needed in order to use one properly — this may become prohibitively expensive when starting out as an audio engineer.

USB microphones are relatively cost-effective solutions that plug directly into your computer; alternatively, an interface may be needed if multiple people will be recording.

USB microphones are budget-conscious solutions with practical uses that deliver fantastic audio quality — this microphone should be an easy choice for most podcasters!

Top microphone recommendations for podcasters: Samson Q2U is priced at $70 while Podmic costs $100; both can be upgraded with Shure SM7B microphones for $400 each, making two setups:

Samson Q2U | $70 for two mes Audio Technica M20x | $50 (x2) Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 | $160 (3) A three to four person setup could cost anywhere between $960 — $1,080.

Samson Q2Us and Audio Technica M20xs cost between $75 (x3) and $50 per microphone respectively (x3 or 4), with RODECaster Pro costing $600 each. Zoom P4s offer an attractive cost-efficient alternative option at $200 each that provide excellent value compared to these flagship microphones.

RECOMMENDED ACCESORIES: RODE PSA1 Boom Arm | $120 Shock mounts (mine are $35–50 each), Foam Ball/Pop Filters or Foam Filters (6–10$ each). *This video may help. It covers different setup options available to beginners such as Rodecaster Pro (The Ultimate Podcast Mixer?) Zoom PodTrak P4 Review/Audio Test etc… 4. Choose Your Podcast Software Solution

Once your podcast episode is recorded, edits are the next step towards perfecting audio production and structuring episodes to meet audience preferences. This stage also gives you an opportunity to structure episodes according to theme while optimizing audio output.

Podcast editing software can often be found for an affordable price; and, there may even be high-quality free options.

Remote Recording Software To record remote interviews efficiently and cost effectively, special software for long distance interviews such as Riverside FM will likely be necessary. At an estimated monthly subscription cost of $9+ per month for studio quality recordings — there’s plenty of reasons to opt for long distance recordings!

Riverside allows users to record audio and video locally even with limited internet connectivity, making recording easy even if there’s an imperfect internet connection. Call-in listener calls can be taken, livestreamed to social media pages live, videos edited directly in browser without losing files while recording; files continuously upload into the cloud during recording so work never goes missing!

2. SquadCast (at $10+ monthly cost) offers studio quality recordings.

SquadCast makes setting up remote podcast interviews simple, recording high-quality, lossless audio. Due to local WAV files being recorded onto each person’s computer, its sound quality far outstrips Zooom; initial set up may require additional steps though this tutorial should help. 3. Zoom * Cost: Free — $15/month * Average recording quality

Most guests have experience using Zoom

Zoom is an accessible remote recording solution with average audio quality that’s widely known to most people. By default, its default features compress audio; to enhance recordings further by choosing better settings. As a pro tip: When recording with Zoom it is best to utilize optimal settings if possible — otherwise default features could compress. occupy

Use GarageBand instead, it offers free editing software with beginner difficulty levels that is much better at compressing calls to reduce compression levels and produce higher quality audio recordings than Skype can offer. Ideally use one of these solutions when producing podcasts: 1. GarageBand (free);

  • Compatibility: Mac and iOS

GarageBand comes preinstalled on most Apple computers; if not already present you can easily download it for free — we believe GarageBand to have a more intuitive user interface than Audacity.

GarageBand is not available on Windows computers or Android phones; this tutorial can show you how to navigate its workspace.

2. Audacity | Free * Difficulty Level = Moderate

Compatible Devices = Mac, Windows and Linux

Audacity is a free open-source audio editor with professional features. Perfect for most podcasters looking to produce great episodes. There can be some hiccups in learning Audacity; we provide many tutorials here so that we can assist with that learning curve!

3. Descript | $10+ per month

Difficulty: Moderate * Compatibility: Mac and Windows

This tutorial shows how to use its video/screen recording feature as well as in-browser editing suite for videos created in Descript. 4. Hindenburg Pro | $12 per month * Difficulty Level = Moderate | Compatible Platforms (Mac + Windows).

Hindenburg is an audio editing software tailored specifically for podcasters and journalists, offering simple tools designed for spoken-word editing with automated workflow options to streamline production process. Here’s a Hindenburg walkthrough to give an impression of its workspace — alternatives might include Adobe Audition (Adobe Audition Lite or Audition Pro), Logic Pro or other podcast editing programs like that are similar.

These tools aren’t essential, but can definitely enhance your workflow and content production process.

1. Otter.ai | $13 per month Otter.ai provides automated transcription service which boasts highly accurate transcripts as quickly as 1–2 business days! It has also received praise from clients due to its quick turn-around times.

Buzzsprout integrates seamlessly with Otter.ai, so when your transcripts are complete you can simply upload them straight into your dashboard for analysis. This service works best if you speak English; otherwise it might provide inaccurate results or have heavy accents which render inaccurate transcription results.

2. Magic Mastering | $6 per month

Magic Mastering automatically levels out and optimizes audio files — like Instagram filters for podcasting — ensuring they meet industry best practices. 2. Audio Hijack | $64 one-time fee

Audio Hijack allows you to record audio from any website or application and save it as an MP3. It is particularly effective at livestreaming with Twitch, StreamYard or Facebook Live, providing high quality recordings that you can save as audio files for future listening pleasure. 5. Record Your First Episode and Produce it For the record your First episode

Prepping to record an episode requires some advance preparation, so follow these three steps for maximum success: 1. Draft an Outline For Your Podcast A common pitfall among new podcasters is tendencies toward rambling; the best way to combat this tendency is writing an outline or script of what the episode should include and include more specific instructions or details within.

Just taking a few seconds to jot down an outline will greatly enhance the flow of your episode. If working with cohosts, share this list so they can work collaboratively on developing it further.

2. Select an Appropriate Place to Record To create the optimal recording conditions, find an area with soft surfaces like furniture, curtains, rugs or carpet — noise can easily travel off hard, flat surfaces so try eliminating these as much as possible before sound-treating with foam panels on walls if necessary.

Its

3 Prepare Your Recording Equipment and Software before beginning recording sessions

Connect your microphone to either a computer or audio recording device using either its USB port, an audio interface or multiple hosts. With multiple hosts using an interface and plugging it directly into their computer.

Once plugged in, go into your audio editing software’s settings and choose an input for that microphone technique. XLR mics may require connection via cable to a USB interface or external recording device like the Podtrak P4. Afterward, recheck microphone technique settings within editing software as soon as recording begins to select audio input for recordings.

Position your mouth two to four inches away from a microphone for optimal sound, although depending on the microphone used this may differ depending on its specifications.

If your recordings contain too many plosives and harsh sibilance, one easy solution may be off-axising the microphone. Position it slightly to one side with its face directed slightly toward your mouth to reduce bursts of air from hitting its capsule directly and produce more natural audio quality.

Record Test Track

Begin by recording yourself speaking at an even volume in various positions and listening back through to see which position produced the highest quality recording. Don’t worry too much about mistakes, stammers or silence; edits can always be made later on in post production.

6. Edit Your Audio

Podcast editing should primarily consist of cleaning up audio and making minor structural alterations, without becoming overwhelmed by production details. Keep the process straightforward for optimal results.

Follow these four tips to streamline your editing workflow: (one, two, three). 2. 1. Produce An Engaging Intro and Outro

Your podcast intro tells listeners who you are and the value your show provides them, hooking listeners in for the ride! When done well, an effective intro hooks listeners in and encourages them to stick around until the whole episode has played. (five, six). (seven, eight…)

2. Edit for Content, then Distractions

Edit for content first and address noise or distraction issues on subsequent passes. By prioritizing content over audio issues too early, polish sections which must later be deleted could become polished out early and polished out entirely later on. When dealing with noise issues too early you might end up polishing sections you later remove. Wedge between tracks as necessary to eliminate unwanted sound sources. 3. Fade between tracks when necessary in order to eliminate unwanted background noise.

When editing audio sections, pops or clicks can sometimes occur when cutting them together. When this occurs, use the fade tool at both ends of clips if this becomes an issue. 4. Draw Up A Punch-List

If you prefer not listening through an entire episode multiple times, create a list of audio distractions you want to check on during your second pass. Doing this can save time while guaranteeing you don’t miss anything important. The cover art for your podcast is often what first attracts listeners on Apple Podcasts or social media. Creating the right image and making sure potential listeners know where your show can be found can only increase listenership!

Artwork conveys quality content, with 62% of new listeners more likely to listen if they like its cover art. Your podcast artwork should meet Apple’s Podcast Art Requirements by complying with these technical specifications:

* square Image (3000 x 3000 pixels); 48dpi resolution, PNG or JPEG file types and colorspace RGB as required;5 Tips on making Your Art Stand Out

Follow these five guidelines to create artwork that stands out in podcast directories and draws new listeners in.

1. Visually communicate the subject matter of your podcast. Your artwork should demonstrate precisely what this podcast covers without resorting to too much symbolism or vague language that might cause potential listeners to be turned off by it.

2. Design for multiple sizes. To maximize its use across various mediums and platforms, your artwork must look stunning even at 55x55 pixels.

3. Minimize Words or Fonts on Cover Art. Limit yourself to no more than four words on your cover art, while making sure it can still be legibly read at small sizes. Likewise, limit yourself to using no more than two complementary fonts for best results.

4. Avoid podcast imagery. Just as movie covers don’t feature images of DVDs and television sets, your podcast cover art shouldn’t depict podcast equipment either; no need to remind listeners they are listening to a podcast!

5. Use Consistent Branding. Your podcast artwork should reflect the identity and brand of your brand as a whole, making subtle modifications as needed for different layouts or pages, but keeping its image consistent. Fortunately, Buzzsprout integrates Canva into their design tools for designing podcast artwork!

Buzzsprout’s Canva integration allows you to design a podcast cover quickly and easily within Buzzsprout itself. Choose from over 250,000 templates, customize one as necessary, and hit Send to Buzzsprout when finished!

When writing for business podcasts, use related terms so readers are assured it applies directly to their needs and topics of discussion. Don’t forget to upload artwork!

Upload artwork created in Canva or pre-loaded onto a USB flash drive into the appropriate field on your dashboard dashboard to create cover art for your podcast cover page. At this stage you will also select which categories your podcast appears under within Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes) to ensure optimal placement on Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes).

Make the choice that best represents your podcast; this can always be modified later.

Consider selecting subcategories to help further define niche categories — better to be at the top than further down in one general category! Finally, upload your first episode.

Drag-and-drop files into the Dashboard, schedule their release time and manage individual episode metadata such as episode title or artwork for every one. Assign podcast show notes per individual episode for ease of navigation and recording show notes for podcast show notes

Listen Notes 10 Launch and Grow your Show

When launching your podcast, there are two strategies available to you when creating its launch: mes Strategy #1: Grand Opening | A grand opening involves building hype before unveiling the show; many podcasters with established followings opt for this approach to begin their broadcasts.

Start planning the soft launch. Set a launch date a few weeks out from now, and reach out to those you think might be interested. Advertising, Apple Podcast’s New and Noteworthy list submission or reaching out directly to publications could all work to promote it — this strategy should all work towards success!.

Soft opening is more discrete. In this strategy, episodes are published without promotion — giving your listeners enough of an impression that someone might actually be listening — giving time for you to settle in, iron out kinks, and overcome impostor syndrome.

Once your podcast succeeds in an unpressurised environment, promotion becomes simpler. Impostor Syndrome

Many podcasters feel intimidated when first starting their show or podcast series; perhaps you dislike your voice or feel inept to discuss its subject matter. But that can all change quickly after seeing its success! When that first successful episode arrives it should give rise to more confidence when discussing promotional avenues — without feeling like impostors themselves when starting up again later! Until that first successful one does it’s best practice is better understood through promotion alone! In truth it could mean less impostor syndrome! When new podcasters encounter imposter Syndrome when initially starting their show or podcast; maybe that feeling when first coming in makes you uncomfortable speaking on topic that was unfamiliar subject to discussion of topic of course will pass with time once everything becomes familiar again…

At times it can be easy to feel out-shone in podcasting; know this is just part of its learning process and that over time things should get simpler. With 7 Marketing tips designed to expand listenership.

Un effective podcast marketing plan takes time, so here are five steps that will help build one for you.

1. Share Your Podcast With Friends and Family

Share your podcast with loved ones to solicit honest opinions as well as have them leave reviews for it on Apple Podcasts.

2. Create a Buzzsprout Ad

Increase listenership for your podcast show with Buzzsprout Ads’ Podcast Promos! They are more effective than traditional ads by targeting only people interested in hearing podcasts — which Buzzsprout Ads does precisely! When creating one with them you: * reach people interested in audio podcasts * target those listening *target the right demographic

3. Post episodes to social media

Sharing podcast content via social media enables you to build connections with listeners that might otherwise be impossible over audio alone.

Visual Soundbites for Facebook, Instagram and TikTok; tweet boosts on Twitter; and LinkedIn content could get your first few episodes heard by at least 10 new listeners if executed successfully.

TikTok can be an incredible platform to spread original content; we’ve seen numerous podcasts become successful when using it as their distribution system.

4. Join Groups & Fora

Providing value through Reddit, Quora or Facebook groups will draw people towards your podcast and help direct listeners in its direction.

Respond to relevant, recent queries with answers you feel confident answering. Be sure to include one episode from your podcast as the link in order to drive traffic directly towards it. Aim for one or two answers like these per new episode released. 5. Cross-promote with other creators

Cross-promotion enables podcasters to collaborate together in marketing each other’s shows — this marketing technique brings your podcast in front of new listeners! Reach out to fellow creators through Podchaser or find hosts’ contact details online (such as websites/social media).

6. Overcast Ads

The Overcast Podcast App exclusively serves podcasting ads; in our experience we obtain 100 new subscribers per ad cycle! If you have the money, this may be an effective strategy to bring on board new listeners quickly.

7. Establish a Call-to-Action

A call to action (CTA) is something you ask listeners to do after listening to each episode and it can help achieve your podcasting goals more quickly and effectively. Some examples include asking listeners to: * subscribe and review your show * download lead magnet * sign up for email list etc

Just make sure not to overwhelm listeners!
