The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Mauritius, Prof. Goolam Mohamedbhai, is being investigated by the authorities in Mauritius for crimes that carry serious prison times of up to five years. The issue of Prof. Goolam Mohamedbhai, also the former secretary-general of the Association of African Universities and the former president of the International Association of Universities, was referred to the police in Mauritius in March 2017 following enquiries of the Financial Services Commission.

It is claimed that Prof. Goolam Mohamedbhai has given false information to the Financial Services Commission regarding his involvement in an investment fund of the ‘ASA Group’ of companies established in 2015. This could potentially lead to serious ramifications for the professor.

Goolam Mohamedbhai is the former secretary-general of the Association of African Universities, the former president of the International Association of Universities and the former vice chancellor of the University of Mauritius. He is currently a member of the governing council of the United Nations University.

The professors standing in the nation and with the UN University council make these allegations of crimes both shocking and highly problematic for the Mauritius government and UN University Council.
