How do you view the world is it a place where for you to win someone has to lose?

Today we are going to talk about sum games(positive, negative, and zero) on the basis of the book “Almanack of Naval Ravikant ” where he shares his world views, he says no one needs to lose for you to win, you both can win together. This framework provides valuable insights for understanding people’s interactions and helps us to make strategic choices to live fulfilling lives.

  1. Zero Sum Game: From Naval’s point of view we observe these games where for you to win some other person has to lose. These are generally observed in a competitive environment with limited resources. Examples include sports events, poker games, etc. Though they are necessary in certain environments, Naval argues that focusing solely on zero-sum games can lead to a win-at-all-costs mentality, fostering negativity and hindering cooperation.
  2. Positive Sum Game: Now these are the most interesting games and is also the most beneficial games to play as there is nobody who loses in these games, it solely focuses on the mindset that collaborations can lead to mutual benefit. Examples include brainstorming ideas in your group and trying to generate solutions to a given problem. These games help people to grow and learn new things from others to achieve a common goal.
  3. Negative Sum Game: These are the worst games to be played and they are generally played when people are generally taken over by their ego or they want to destroy the other party even at the cost of their destruction. In these games, both parties lose something Naval suggests it is beneficial for you to quickly identify these types of games and get out of it.

Naval suggests we should choose our game correctly and I would like to give a quote from his book “Play Stupid Games Win Stupid Prices”.

Action Steps: What we should take away from this article are

  1. Minimize Negative sum games: Nobody benefits from it.
  2. Seek Positive sum games: Life’s greatest rewards often come from creating win-win scenarios so try to find more collaborative and mutually beneficial games.
  3. Don’t get stuck in the Zero sum games: Try avoiding a win-lose mentality and focus on self-improvement and achieving your goals.
