I took it upon myself to understand Trump, and his supporters. What I found was millions of great Americans who had been disenfranchised, normal people like you and I, who did not recover from the Great Recession. They’re pissed off about Obama Care, endless wars, trade deals that have killed jobs, higher taxes, a rigged economy–and, they are not wrong.
Jack looked at me gently. He explained how important a daily practice is — writing, meditating, and pausing in those moments when we feel overwhelmed by emotion. He explained that so often we operate on autopilot and even if our conscious brain knows the right thing to do, our subconscious takes over and guides us into actions we may regret later. The only way to stop the subconscious brain from guiding our behavior is to be aware of what’s happening in the moment — to be mindful of the body as thoughts come and go. And the only way to be mindful is to train the brain so that mindfulness becomes a habit.
