Fun with sparklers and extended exposure photography

A few years, I saw some photographs of and by Pablo Picasso (yes, he dabbled in photography) and they stuck with me. So last night, I happened to have my SLR in hand while my children and niece were playing with sparklers.

After a little experimentation, I figured out how to get the shots above: It was dark outside (minimal lighting in the back yard). I used a 1 second exposure and I used a flash (Canon 480EX). So the stationary image of the children was the beginning of the 1 second that the aperture was open. The rest of the second was to get the sparklers moving around.
