Quality gates: that’s an interesting idea to see them not just as gates but also as synchronization points to be reached at your pace (more or less).

The refund idea was just a whim. Haven’t thought it through. But why not experiment with it? Being rewarded (with a saving) might be motivating. Or instead: Don’t promise a refund, but take the $20 to buy some kind of reward. “If you finish you’ll receive a XYZ gadget.” That way the revenue from all students can be pooled to buy the few rewards for the few finishers. And if it turns out everyone is finishing… well, then decrease the incentive ;-)

It’s an interesting idea to move pre-/post-offline work online. Not this time, though ;-) In that case the offline part could be shortened to maybe a weekend.

I already had the idea for a shorted “training experience” (just 2–3 days) in Hamburg. Instead of mountain biking I’d collaborate with a fitness studio. They’d provide personal trainers and workout rooms/machines for the students to use with a coach maybe twice a day for an hour. To charge this kind of shorted workshop (sweatshop? :-) with more content online pre-work could surely help.

Collaboration: Definitely! In my usual offline trainings which are done as 3 to 6 1–2 day sessions spread over the course of several months students need to do some homework in between sessions. This homework always is done as a group. Without the support of a group it just falls through the cracks of daily business.

But to call it “pair learning” gives this a new slant. So far I’m advocating “mob learning” for homework ;-) (similar to “mob programming”). That’s fine for inhouse trainings where students can meet as a group. But for open trainings with participants from several companies that would not work. “Pair learning”, though, can work. Even better if students get to know each other better during online live sessions. Then they can pair up for the next exercise. They could even decide to meet, if they live close to each other. If not, they can spent time together online using Skype or whatever. Great idea!

Ok, so what are we talking about?

* Mostly online, but occasionally offline training.
* Mostly async online, but occasionally sync online training.
* Online pair learning (for accountability)
* Pulling students through with “progress gates” and maybe some reward when they finish
* Charging up the offline training periods with high intensity activities (for learning community creation and better learning by becoming more emotional)
