Lucky for You

My boss McCoy said that we should do something. And I did. To the lover I don’t have yet, this one’s for you.

I like to know things

I like to learn. I like to know interesting facts about anything. I like to know how the world works. I like those core topics that move the world around that people don’t think about. I like economics. Oh I love economics. Oh you mean the real reason Putin is shitting on Ukraine is to raise the price of oil?? Whether it’s true or not, I like knowing enough to consider that angle. This is the beauty of knowledge.

I like economics, behavioural psychology, physics, language, geopolitics, cybernetics, finance (how money actually works) and philosophy. I like epistemology. These are nature’s topics; they give you insight into how the world works. Why countries make certain decisions. Why people act the way they act. I like when you tell me about your own little specialisation, about your own theories of the world. I like when you explain the concepts to me. This is how I learn, passively, through conversation.

I like conversations

I like to talk about anything; world views, religion, spirituality, money, business, sex, physics. Trust me, I know enough to follow a conversation. And if I do not, I will listen attentively, I will ask questions and follow ups, I will make jokes so that everything sinks in better and you do not feel uncomfortable teaching me. I like to listen to you talk about your view on the world. I like to listen to you talk about the ideas that fascinates you to your core. Your excitement to just speak is what gives me joy.

I like to talk about intricate details. Tell me about your day, about your experiences, about your job, about the book you’re reading, about your best and worst sexual experiences. Tell me about the time you got super drunk and vomited on the drivers laps. Tell me I will listen. Yes, I be amebo, better give me that gist. I like it when we gist and we laugh. I like it when we banter. I like it when you’re worried about something and share it with me. I do not only like that you trust me with it, I like that you trust me to not judge you. I like that you trust me to see you as another complex human being with complex emotions forced to live in an unpredictable complex world. There is no greater honor than that. I like when you ask my opinion on things, I like that you consider me part of the conversation and allow me to share my own ideas. I like how you listen with rapt attention.

I like words

I like the effect that they have, the power they employ. People throw so much shit on motivational speakers, but forget that commanders of entire battalions, war strategists, and even the leaders of your favourite companies need to be motivational speakers. If a commander cannot raise the morale of his people before battle, do you think they would willingly plunge their lives into death, ignore families and loved ones back home, ignore peace? The power of words is in their ability to kill.

Today I learned the word expletive. A word to describe using meaningless words in a sentence simply for the effect they have. So instead of I have a lot of work to do, I say I have a shitload of work to do.

I like stories and art

I love beautiful stories in whatever form they appear. I love TV, film, cinema, anime, books, short-story fiction, essays, non-fiction, memoirs, music... if a story can be told beautifully through any medium, believe that I will pay attention to it.

I like music

My belief is if it slaps, it slaps. The need to constrict yourself to one genre has always confused me. The world has so much to offer, why choose only one? I love the African sound right now. Especially since 2020. Afro beats has something in it that calls to me more than the others, I think it’s the familiarity of it. I think it’s the way it makes me feel like I’m finally home.

I’ve always preferred the harmony of sound to just the lyrics or the vocals. Sound when done right will reverberate through your body and touch a piece of your soul. This is why I fuck with Saint JHN, Burna, Monaky; why I fuck with Kanye, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, Daughter. This is why you should listen to Basketmouth’s albums, The Cavemen’s albums, Fireboy’s albums!!!

This is why I love Rema. I really love Rema. The man came and created his own sound; ever experimenting, taking his sweet precious time just to give us another banger!

I too like woman

Oh, you thought I wouldn’t admit it? But that’s why we – you and I – are here. I like their curves, their shapes, the lithe, the figure. I like how they sound, I like their laughter. I like their emotional intelligence. I like how they know a man will never admit his ego is fragile, and if they like you, will tell you what you need to hear to keep it whole. And if they don’t, that man’s ego will break like a dozen eggs fallen of a crate. I like how they pretend their egos aren’t fragile too.

I like cleavages. I like thighs. If she looks hot coming from the front best believe I will turn to see if she’s hotter from the back. I used to feel guilty about this because I thought I was objectifying women to a high degree. But I’ve grown to learn I was not. I’m a straight testosterone filled man, my lustful attraction is actually quite normal.

Besides women do it too. Yes, you think I don’t know girls gawk over men with super hot or regular hot bodies because they fit into your fantasy? The difference however, is that they do it expertly, and privately. They talk about it only within girl groups. They check you out in their beds through your social media accounts. They pretend to look at something else but the whole time they’ve been looking at you. And we won’t catch you because you maintain a bitch face while at it. If you’re doing it, why should I feel bad about doing the same thing?

So yes, if I see a head turner, and I’m not distracted by the chaos in my own soul, I will turn. Honestly, I actually no mind marry all of them. When I saw Uzui from Demon Slayer with his three beautiful, sexy and ferocious wives, I was jealous of the man. Which brings me to the next thing.

I love anime

So instead of boring you with the intricacies of why everyone should watch anime. Understand that I’ll say Ohayo instead of good morning. Or Arigato instead of thank you. Or Jaa ne instead of see you later. Understand that I will say Daijobun because I truly believe everything will be fine in the end. And Ganbatte because more than saying Goodluck, sometimes you have to remember to hang in there; to persevere. I agree that I do not speak my own language well, you can tease me for it. But this is just how much anime means to me.

I love anime because it allows you explore thoughts, emotions and ideas that can never be fully represented through live-action.

Anime allows you explore the human race, the human condition in worlds that are not your own. Beastars explores identity, racism and community, but guess what; all the characters are animals. Psycho Pass explores the problems that will occur in a utopian future. Mushoku Tensei continuously asks the question: if you could do life all over again, in a different world, with all the knowledge you have now, would you do it better? Slime Tensei asks the same question but it’s funnier and instead plays with politics, racism, community building and economics. Attack on Titan is clearly more than just surviving Titans — Shinzou Sasageyo!

Like all good literature, anime asks us to explore our own humanity, to ask ourselves: how do we get out of the labyrinth of our own soul? It continuously probes the question; how can I be better? This is why I’m always telling you to watch anime. I know I was gushing, but that is how happy good anime makes me. Japanese people are very good writers.

I like to make my people happy

I like to hype them. I like to please them. I often say I’m a people-pleaser, but you have to be my people first. I’ll run small errands, get you something while I’m at the mall, congratulate you on your win, console you when you lose. I will listen to you rant, engage in your theatrics, I will watch you perform. I will do what is within my power to make you smile. Why are we here if we can’t at least make each other happy?

I like to laugh

I like dad jokes. I like dirty jokes. I like dark humour. I like memes. I will share a meme with you if I’m sure you will relate or it will make you laugh; what is happiness if not something to be shared.

It’s really not hard to make me laugh. Be sarcastic, be goofy, be honest. If it’s funny I will laugh with my chest. I literally mean my chest. I will fall to the floor choking, laughing very loud. I like to be happy. I like stand up comics: Dave Chapelle, Trevor Noah, Kevin Hart, and John Mulaney. I think Bovi and Basketmouth are hilarious. I love sitcoms, comedy series, comedy movies. Why am I still talking? The point is simple, make me laugh, keep me happy, and you’ll have me on your side. Lucky for you, this isn’t hard. Even if you think you aren’t funny, just have a good sense of humour, I already crack myself up.

I like touch

I like hugs. I like kisses. I like massages. I like to make some form of contact when I’m around you. I like when we sit in silence, indulged in our phones, our legs in each other as the only reminder that we are here. I like to rest my head on your legs, on your thighs, on your ass. I like it when you rest your head in my chest, it’s as if you trust me to take care of you. I like to play with your hair, your skin, your neck. A new-born will survive days without food, but will die if they are not given the warmth of touch – no matter how well fed they are. I am that new-born.

I like my friends

I’ve been blessed with good friends. I’ve lost some pretty good friendships too, but Lord knows I am blessed with good friends. I like to spend time with my people. I like to do things for them. More than once I’ve gone out of my way to make them smile, to see them happy - to make them totally comfortable. If I had rich people money, the amount of parties I would have thrown, gifts I would have given — that spa massage you need, that new camera lens to replace your old one, that ticket to Paris you’ve been asking for. It’s not to say I don’t do what I can now... but there’s more that can be done, and I will do it, I am still young and money is on its way. When I care about you, best believe that you will enjoy to the fullest.

But understand my kindness is not unwarranted. I love my friends because of the many thousand ways they have shown up for me. And I feel like that’s the most important thing in friendship; that we show up for each other in the best way that we can, no matter what is happening. That support, that safety, I would not replace with anything.

I like when my friends tell me things. I like that they trust me enough to discuss the intricacies of their lives. I like to know even the mundane details; oh you made egusi today? How did turn out? Did you burn it again? I like the excitement in their voice when they’re talking about something they feel passionate about. Or about an idea that totally fascinates them. I like that try to deepen our connection by introducing me to their hobbies. I may not always be into it as they are, but the effort, that effort is priceless.

I am friends with a diverse set of individuals with a large variety of interests. I like that I am open minded enough to see them as complex human beings who will have different opinions, ideas and beliefs from me. Most importantly, I like that my friends are friends with me.

I love my family

I love my dad. I love how he loves through actions not words. I love how he assures you everything will be alright, and like a good parent, he goes out to make sure everything is alright. I love how he’s a good provider. I have met people with extremely shitty dads, and regardless of his flaws, my father is not one of them.

I love my mum. I love her wisdom. I love her fury. I love her care. I love her ability to relentlessly go after a problem and solve it. I may have learned it late, hell, it has not even registered yet, but she’s the one who taught me that if you do not try to solve your problem yourself, to look for solutions yourself, no one will do it for you. No one will come to save you. I love how she cares for us. I love her soup. I fucking love her stew. I hate it when she worries to the point of obsession, but she is a mother. I am her creation. Her reaction is normal. This is just another way to express her love. If you don’t worry about something you care about, something you made, then is it really yours?

I love my sisters

I would kill for them. I would not trade them for anything. If there is a next life, I will still choose them. There are limits that I will surpass for them. Hills I will climb for their happiness. I love that they would the same for me. I love that they have done the same for me. My sisters make me laugh. And as you’ve learned, there’s nothing more important to me than being happy. Everything is better when we are happy.

I have heard of families who do not support each other. Lucky for me, I do not know what that’s like. And if you become mine, lucky for you, you won’t either.
