This article confirms my own experience with Kaiser in Lancaster, Ca. The mandatory arbitration provision (take it or leave it, a contract of adhesion) rests on top of a fraudulent grievance process. Yet filing grievances is a prerequisite to arbitration. When a doctor fails to listen, or makes a ridiculous diagnosis without reading your chart, you have no recourse. I paid cash for a second opinion on a surgical recommendation from a non-Kaiser doctor after Kaiser refused to pay, and it turned out Kaiser had recommended the wrong procedure. I’m done with Kaiser forever the next time I can enroll in anything else. The author of this article emphasizes that Kaiser rips off young healthy people. I can add that it is even worse for old and chronically ill people.
