You’ve got the why. You’ve got the safety measures down. Now it’s time for the fun part — creating a digital portfolio that’s both impressive and uniquely you. Think of this less like homework and more like building your own personal brand headquarters!

But First, Where Does My Masterpiece Live?

There are tons of options out there, so let’s break it down:

  • Website Builders: Great if you want control but aren’t a coder. Squarespace, Wix, etc., offer templates and easy drag-and-drop editing.
  • Portfolio-Specific Platforms: Options like Behance and Dribbble cater to creatives, letting you show work and network within your field.
  • Roll Your Own: Know how to code? Building your portfolio from scratch gives ultimate flexibility but takes more time and skill.

Hero Tip: No one option is “best.” Research each based on your budget, comfort level, and how much customization you want.

What to Put In Your Portfolio: The Essentials

  • About Me That’s Not Boring: A short (like, really short) bio that tells people what you do AND what kind of person you are to work with.
  • Your Best Work EVER: Be ruthless! Only include projects you’re still proud of. If it’s old but golden, explain how you’d approach it differently today to show you’ve grown
  • Contact Made Easy: A form is better than your actual email. Spell out how you like to be contacted (some people hate phone calls!)
  • Social Proof: Testimonials, logos of clients you’ve worked with (if allowed), or even positive social media mentions build trust.

Bonus Stuff: Leveling Up Your Portfolio

  • Case Studies: Go deeper into 1 or 2 projects. Outline the problem, your process, and the awesome results for the client.
  • The Skills Matrix: If you’re technical, a visual way to show your proficiency with different tools or languages helps clients know if you’re the right fit.
  • Personality Pops: Your portfolio doesn’t have to be deathly serious. Use colors, fonts, and even a bit of humor that feel like YOU.

Design Crimes to Avoid

  • Walls of Text: People skim websites. Break up info into bite-sized chunks, use headings, and make it easy to find what matters.
  • Mystery Meat Navigation: Can people find your best work in 2 clicks? Make the most important stuff super obvious.
  • It’s All About ME: Remember, clients visit because they have a problem YOU can solve. Speak to their pain points, not just how awesome you are.

Hero Tip: Get feedback! Show your portfolio in progress to a few trusted people (ideally some in your field and some not) to see where they get confused or what excites them most.
