Probably could have called that one! :-) Audience segment is always a driving factor. What would be interesting in light of the studies Charles cited above would be, if you are exposing a single menu icon (regardless of iconography or labeling) vs. having the top 4–5 options persistently available, how much of a hit might you be taking? You didn’t mention whether that was the case or not, but if you are, it would be interesting to see if your results from that next step mapped to the results FB et al had.
