The reason I subscribe to centrism isn’t for the sake of compromise; It’s because I won’t compromise. It is true that people should be protected and loved. That they should be allowed to unionize and practice their religions in peace. That minority rights should be protected. But it also true that businesses are the country’s economic engines. That the well being of people is directly affected by the health of their workplaces. And that wealth in itself should not be villified. That people should be paid based on the amount of value they bring in. I understand this is hard, but this is also the real American moonshot. What we’re seeing is not the failure of centrism, but the success of charisma. Trump won because he got people excited. So did Obama. So did W. Bush and Bill Clinton and H.W. Bush. The center needs a charismatic leader who shows them that cartoonish pendulum swinging between idealogies isn’t the answer just because it’s easier to bumper sticker. Centrists must do the hard work of protecting the country’s workers and its businesses.
