TRUMP HAS TO REMOVE THE ACT JONES FOR PUERTO RICO

Alright ive decided to tackle the issue of why Puerto Rico hasnt received aid fast enough and this is due to the “Act Jones” which was an act passed in World War 1 (1920) to ensure that the country maintained a shipbuilding industry and seafaring labor force.

According to the New York Times “Section 27 of this law decreed that only American ships could carry goods and passengers from one United States port to another. In addition, every ship must be built, crewed and owned by American citizens.”

“Under the law, any foreign registry vessel that enters Puerto Rico must pay punitive tariffs, fees and taxes, which are passed on to the Puerto Rican consumer.”

This is strangling our economy and preventing us from receiving international aid as fast as possible because of the tariff rates and because the only way to work around this is to send the ship to Jacksonville and transfer the merchandise to a US vessel which costs are then transferred to the consumer.

This is clearly no longer the intent of the Act Jones or cause yet it remains. United States needs to suspend the Act Jones ASAP.

For those from Puerto Rico in US here I have figured out thanks to some friends in Austin on what to do to put your voice in and will provide you a template on what to say

Step 1)
Find the congressman of your district here:
https://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

Step 2)
Locate both Congressman’s phone numbers. His Washington office and district office number, most likely at the bottom of the page (footer).
Make sure you call every other day and please remember we need to cowork and coexist in a situation like this. Anger and frustration wont take us anywhere.

Here is what you should say:
Hello! My name is ______, and I am a constituent of Rep. _______. May I please speak with the staffer who runs homeland security issues?
<will either be transferred or told you can leave a message> I want to urge Rep. _____ to support any and all efforts to suspend the application of the Jones Act to Puerto Rico as it recovers from Hurricane Maria. My family lives there, and the Jones Act is slowing down aid relief — relief that’s desperately needed right now to save American lives and prevent the beginning of a disease epidemic.

If you would like to know more info about the Act Jones here is the reference:

I decided to first write the article in english due to the fact that this is something more for Puertoricans living in US.

PLEASE SHARE TO CREATE AWARENESS AND REACH AS MANY DISTRICTS AS POSSIBLE.

https://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
