The Houston Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (HNOMA) and Ramsxor Group proudly present Catch These Compliments (CTC) micro festival — Architecture & Design Edition, set to take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the MATCH, located at 3400 Main St, Houston, TX 77002. Celebrating The Love Bomb Room’s 3-year anniversary, this event will highlight some of Houston’s brightest architects and designers.

This year’s artist spotlights feature the brilliance of Sheryl Tucker Devasquez, the Interim Director of Interior Architecture at the University of Houston College of Architecture & Design, showcasing her highly acclaimed art exhibit titled, ‘The Hair Salon: Black Hair as Architecture.’ Additionally, there is Mr. Gooding’s Art Class presenting a reinterpretation of a “City of Love” through the eyes and minds of youth artists. Moreover, a collaborative art installation by David Landry and HNOMA Vice President Brittany R. Guillory of ART FEEN, titled ‘Bloom On: A Flora Untangling of Due Diligence’ not only captivates the senses but serves as a testament to the therapeutic essence of creativity. In times of uncertainty, art becomes a sanctuary, offering solace, introspection, and a pathway to collective healing, encompassing this year’s CTC festival theme, which is part of the ‘Heal The Self through the Arts Series’.

Attendees can also enjoy a thought-provoking panel discussion entitled ‘Architecture in the Community: a Dialogue with Developers,’ featuring accomplished architects and developers Dominique Washington, Justin Tablet, and Ptah Harding as panelists.

HNOMA & Ramsxor Group proudly announces industry luminary Michael Ford, renowned as “The Hip Hop Architect” and adorned with AIA, NOMA, NCARB credentials, as the keynote speaker. Ford will delve into the intersection of architecture and hip hop, celebrating 50 years of the genre and tracing its evolution. His insightful keynote promises to provide a captivating journey through the transformative power of both architectural design and the ever-evolving art form of hip hop, offering an enriching discourse that transcends disciplines and pays homage to the cultural impact of hip hop on the world of architecture.

Hosted by Micki Washington, HNOMA’s current president, and Bighani, Founder of the Catch These Compliments global movement. Media personality Mz Blue from 95.3 Jamz will be present, documenting the experience with interviews. Derrick Callahan from Gabriel Contract Solutions will contribute to the community by welcoming the guests with his personality, adding another layer to the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

The Headlining & Closing Act for the Catch These Compliments® Micro-Festival is DJ Elevated, half of Houston’s very own Soul Control. Known for their viral electrifying ElectroBounce events in the Houston scene, it is fitting to bring their high-energy dance party, where they spin hip-hop, electronic fusion, house, New Orleans bounce, and a myriad of other genres and subgenres, into the micro-festival. Having DJ Elevated close out is particularly apt, given that Soul Control’s signature approach is to ‘DJ to heal,’ reflecting their event tagline of ‘movement-based healing.’

Catch These Compliments — Houston Edition is open to all ages, offering an organic touring opportunity to ‘Heal the Self Through the Arts.’ Whether it’s words of affirmation, singing off-key lyrics to your favorite songs, or exchanging tips and insights into the design industry, CTC has curated an energized experience packed with food prepared by Celebrity Chef — Chef Cassie, fellowship amongst local giants, and insights from industry professionals.

Tickets are available online and at the venue. Join us for a day of celebration and exploration of the intersection of art, architecture, wellness, hip-hop and community spirit. For more information, visit HNOMA’s website or Catch These Compliments website.

“I’m honored to participate in this year’s Catch These Compliments collaboration with Houston NOMA. This event brings together culture, hip-hop, as well as health & wellness to fuse them with architecture and real estate development. In a lot of ways, this combination is representative of my life & career. Throughout my career, I’ve been intentional about incorporating my life experiences and perspective into the thought behind the spaces I design. This is how I leave my mark on the projects I am a part of. Ultimately when elements of culture and background come together to inform what we develop and build, we end up creating spaces that speak to who we are.” — Ptah Harding, Senior Development Manager — Venterra Realty Corporate Office, Panelist
