THE CLASH OF TITANS(INDIA-CHINA BORDER CLASH)

The first fatal confrontation, in more than four decades, between the two world powers took the world by storm in June 2020. The focus of every major news outlet was not the COVID-19, but the deadly border clash between the Chinese PLA and Indian Military at LAC. Many casualties resulted without any resultant outcome. But what was it all about? What is LAC? Who suffered losses and who paved their way to victory? Let’s break it down to a simpler picture:

The Line Of Actual Control, also dubbed as LAC, is the demarcating, disputed, border between China’s southern Xinjiang region and India’s northern states of Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. It spans over a vast area of more than 3340km of mostly an uninhabited wasteland. These 2070 miles include lakes, barren lands, and snow-capped mountains. Interestingly, the LAC was formed as a result of the SINO-INDIAN war of 1962, in which India suffered a humiliating defeat.

Now, why is it a disputed border? First of all as already mentioned that this border was came on the world map only after the 1962 war. Secondly, as a result of the war, China annexed then Indian-controlled Askai Chin, and both parties lay strong claims over land on either side of the border.
The series of events that lead to the deadly clash began on 5th May 2020 when soldiers from both sides came face to face on Pangong pso lake. Basically, Chinese troops objected to a road construction by Indian troops towards the strategic locations leading to LAC. Then on the 21st of the same month, Chinese troops entered Galwan lake valley in Indian controlled Ladakh region, and finally, a violent clash took place on the fateful day of may 5th, 2020 when 20 Indian soldiers, including a colonel, were brutally killed by Chinese troops. But the most shocking thing was that not a single gunshot was fired rather these soldiers were beaten to death by batons and sticks marred with nails and barbed wires. China has not disclosed its casualties to this day.
