These days, it is rare to find a fashionable man wearing anything other than a belt, not that there is anything wrong with it. However, if you wish to really stand out, consider wearing men’s trouser braces. This rarely chosen sartorial route will take you to a whole new world of styles.

Braces, also known as suspenders, have rules just like any other component of your wardrobe. Here are some ideas to apply.

Match with Shoes

Like belts, braces should also be coordinated with the shoes when wearing. More specifically, the button holders and your shoes must be of the same color. The only exception to the rule is obviously when wearing a tuxedo with white braces. Break this rule only when you are confident in your color coordination abilities.

Match with the Ties

As braces rest on the torso, they end up sharing a visual plane with the tie. As such, if you are going to be wearing a tie, make sure that your braces match them. Of course, the standard rules of mixing patterns and colors apply in this situation.

Those new to the world of braces will find solids to be their best friend. Due to their versatility, these braces can pair well not only with solid ties but also patterned ones. After all, you will only have to match the colors and you’ll be set. If choosing patterned braces, the ties should be either solid or have discreet patterns. While they lack versatility, they can look fantastic when paired correctly.

The alternative to this would be coordinate with the shirt and trousers. The same coordination rules apply.

No Clips and Belts

Two of the biggest fashion faux pas that you can make with braces is wearing them with clips or with belts. Clip-on suspenders look as if they were an afterthought. As for belts, they are obviously unnecessary since braces are meant to hold your trousers. By adding belts, you will be perceived as someone unnecessarily preoccupied with keeping up the pants.

Wearing With Belt Loops

Ideally, you shouldn’t be wearing braces with trousers that have belt loops. Doing so can make the loops look rather empty. However, you might still be able to carry off the look. The only thing you need to ensure is that everything else about you should be impeccable. There is no need to worry if you have side adjuster tabs. They won’t clash with your braces.

Check the Trouser Rise

Make it a point never to get braces if you wear trousers of the low rise variety. They never look good when worn with men’s trouser braces. As such, high rise trousers that sit at the natural waist are the perfect choice for braces. Doing so will be more physically comfortable for you as well.

Placement of Buckles or Adjusters

All braces come with buckles that allow the length to be adjusted. Previously, suspenders were available in set sizes just like belts are available these days. This allowed the buckles to remain exactly where they should be. As a side note, that location happens to be the center of your torso. Of course, these days, braces come in one size for all. As such, check the placement of the buckles to ensure optimum comfort. If you have issues, consider investing in a custom set of suspenders.

How to Wear Braces?

Of course, knowing how to wear braces with your outfits is essential knowledge if you want to look confident in the look.

  • With Jeans

While many may consider pairing braces with jeans to be wrong, the fact is that it is possible to look great if you know what you are doing. First of all, retrofit that pair of denims with suspender buttons. Now, opt for rayon braces as they look rougher and look better with denim than silken braces.

  • With Bowties

Suspenders and bowties are a classic combination. To ensure the perfect look, eliminate clip-ons. That means avoiding clip-on bowties and clip-on suspenders.

  • With Tuxedos

Another classic look, braces can pair perfectly with tuxedos. You can wear them with a vest or a cummerbund without issues. All you need to ensure is that they be white.

With these points in mind, you will be well on your way to rocking braces in no time at all. Of course, always opt for quality. They look better and will last longer like any other luxury travel accessories.
