As is becoming apparent to me as a new reader of Johnstone, she finds very good things to talk about and then comes up with an oddly silly focus on the subject.

In this case, the suggestion that the Democratic Party is dead or dying is ridiculous. Not worth discussing. The “oh my…I didn’t know there was gambling going on in this establishment” hand-wringing over the evil that the leaders of the Democratic Party tried to do to Bernie Sanders is amusing (as it was in Casablanca). But none of it gets to the heart of the failures of the Democrats.

The nomination of Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders happened because more registered Democrats wanted Clinton as their candidate. It’s possible that some of the Party’s crime slightly influenced that desire, but given the enormous number difference between Clinton voters and Sander voters, it’s almost impossible to argue that it was definitive.

Let’s put all that aside then. Instead, consider that the Democrats haven’t run a leftist liberal candidate for office since…well, they haven’t ever. People who want Bernie Sanders and his ilk will need to come up with a way of getting rid of the two party system of which most Americans are very proud. Or they will have to start by doing things at a more local level (as the Tea Party did). Run some socialist types for Congress or for the Senate in Democratic Primaries. Gain some traction. Then maybe there’s a chance to do something at the presidential level.

Regardless, Johnstone’s RIP for the Party is nonsense.
