“Select but one,” the slender sidhe grabbed the smaller creature’s neck, jerking the skin in place. The creature became human. Next came the horrid plastic face, held on with elastic band: a mask over a mask. “Send her to me.”
Sprinting to the schoolyard, the fey joined Class 2C’s Halloween Parade and whispered sugar spun promises at the human ahead of her.
The girl child wandered dreamily to the trees.
The sidhe sighed. She would miss her young fey, whose music made mortals cry blood. But this was a worthy exchange.
After all, not every changeling had to be newborn.
