Alicia tore into freshly-picked corn ear and without hesitation dove in, hardly tasting the candy. She was not going to be Grandpa’s harvest scarecrow.
But her big brother Timmy won by a minute. Alicia nearly cried. She hated birds.
Grandpa handed her a broom, then lashed her to a platform amid the plants. “Just swat ‘em,” he said. “And don’t make a face. Everybody in the fambly helps.”
“Guess it’s only dumb crows,” she mumbled.
Grandpa laughed. “Crows?”
A vast humming rose in the distance, louder than the combines. And Alicia realized: Crows don’t eat sugar.
But insects did.
