“Trick or treat!”
Not a request — a demand with one expected outcome.
Not at my home. “Which would you actually like?” I ask.
“Treat!” And they receive chocolate that tastes like sand and sour milk.
Rarely, one stands defiant. A rebellious princess, a bespectacled scientist. She fixes me with a gaze of great daring: “Trick.”
My heart soars. For her I whip up charms, spells, hexes. “Save this for your most dire moment,” I say, handing over a warped piece of hard yellow candy.
“What’s it for?”
I never answer. I close the door. She’ll find out.
They always do.
