Do I Matter?

On April 4, 2015 at 9:30am, South Carolina Police Officer Michael Slager stopped motorist Walter Scott for a non-functioning third brake light. This stop took place in an Auto Parts store parking lot. According to dash cam video the officer spoke briefly to Mr Scott and then returned to his car, at which time Mr Scott got out of his car and fled. Officer Slager gave chase, they scuffled, Mr Scott got away, and ran again. From a distance of about fifteen to twenty feet Officer Slager fired eight shots at Mr Scott hitting him in the back five times, killing him. The bullet that killed Mr Scott entered his lungs and heart. Immediately following the shooting, Officer Slager radioed a dispatcher, stating, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He grabbed my Taser.” The officer said the because Mr Scott had grabbed his taser he feared for his life.

Feared for his life.

While this was going on a bystander video taped the events. On the video tape in question you can see the officer coolly shoot Mr Scott in the back as he runs away. You can also the Officer then walk over and hand cuff Mr Scott as he lay shot and bleeding on the ground. You will not see the Officer attempt to assist Mr Scott in anyway. You will then see the Officer go and pickup an object and place it by Mr Scott. Not being sure what this object is we will have to speculate. I’m going to guess it was the taser. All of this was on tape. You can watch it here

After this video surfaced it was investigated and in June of 2015 Officer Slager was indicted on a charge of murder. Viewing this video above, I would have to agree. This was a murder. About six weeks ago the now former Officer was brought to trial and early this week those proceedings ended in a mistrial due to a hung juror. On the stand the Mr Slager said that he feared for his life.

Feared for his life

He was so fearful that he calmly shot Mr Scott in the back, and then planted evidence by him. And one juror believed him. One juror recognized and related to that fear, even though they saw this same video. Saw him shoot an unarmed man in the back. Saw him walk over and plant evidence on his victim and wouldn’t convict him.

I am part of a podcast called ThreeGuysOn(, I was reminded by a listener that I said at the time this happened that there would be no conviction. That a jury would not convict. I’m tired of being right. I don’t say this with joy, or an I told you so attitude. I’m truly tired. I’m tired of living in a country that doesn’t value me.

The Ku Klux Klan is marching in the streets. A man who ran on a platform of catering to racists is set to occupy the White House. White separatists are allowed to spew filth unchecked, and a man who shot a man in the back as he ran away from him will not be punished. This country doesn’t value me nor those who look like me. It truly never has unless I act in a manner it deems acceptable, total subservience. I fear it never will
