The Cost of Applying to Medical School and How You can Save Money on the Process

Right about now there are thousands of hopeful pre-meds currently applying for medical school, all hoping to gain a coveted spot at a medical school next year. However, one thing that many people often underestimate is the cost. It is an expensive process and in this article I hope to lay out step by step how much you can expect to spend on each step of the process, and even how to save some money.

The Primary Application
The first thing you need to do when applying for medical school is submit the AMCAS application. The important thing to know about this is that the price is not static, meaning that the more schools you apply to the more money you will end up paying. As of right now (2019 application), the cost is $170 for the first school, and $39 for each additional school. The average number of schools that an applicant applies to is 16. So $170 + $39(16) = $794. However, many students choose to apply to more schools for a variety of reasons such as weak GPA, low MCAT, mediocre extracurricular activities, from California. It is not unheard of to apply to 30 or more schools, for a starting cost of $170+ $39(29) =$1301.
